The now-covered tribal butterfly tattoo on Cheryl’s lower back was her oldest tattoo, dating back to at least 2002.  In the above photos, taken in 2011, she had already begun work on the swirling design that now covers her lower back.

Cheryl added this portion of the new design in an eleven-hour session in August 2011 at Shamrock Social Club in Los Angeles. The tattoo represents a fresh start after her 2010 divorce. “I designed it myself with the help of an artist and had it done to symbolise a new beginning,” she said.

According to The Mirror, Cheryl told a friend “The tattoo is deeply personal. It took weeks to come up with the final design. It has a strong symbolic meaning and signifies a fresh start and my new independence.”

Ariel Winter has a tiger tattoo on her upper back which she got in July 2016 from Dr Woo, who used a single needle technique to create the fine lines. The tiger is a symbol of protection: “I have a tiger on my back because I’ve always felt like I’ve been a protector for other people, and I’ve always had these amazing protectors in my life,” she told ET.

Sarah Hyland got this tattoo of a hummingbird behind her ear in November 2014 from artist Dr Woo. She explained its meaning in an instagram post: “The hummingbird, though it be but little, can travel great distances. It is a carrier of joy and lightness of being. Lucy Hale’s very first tattoo was a ribbon bow on the back of neck.  She got the cutesy design inked by Shamrock Social Club artist Dr. Woo before he became one of the most in-demand tattooists in Los Angeles, and she continues to be a fan of his work.

She talked about the tattoo, which was her only one at the time, in a 2012 interview with Maniac Magazine:

My most maniac moment was when I was 19 and I got my tattoo. It’s on the back of my neck. It’s a bow. Luckily I still like it. I got it after a break up and I wanted to do something rebellious, which is a kind of out of the norm for me.
