Dr Woo Tattoos

Nicola Peltz

Nicola Peltz and her brother Will have matching Hebrew tattoos on the left side of their ribs. Her tattoo says “משפחה ערשט” which means “family first” in Yiddish while Will has only the first word “משפּחה” meaning “family.” Yiddish is the historical language of Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jews and it is written in the Hebrew alphabet. They chose Yiddish for their tattoos because they are Jewish and have Ashkenazi heritage on their father’s side of the family.

This was Nicola’s first tattoo, and their July 2016 session with artist Dr Woo was the first time under the needle for Will as well. His tattoo is much thicker and darker than hers and looks more like traditional Hebrew lettering. Her tattoo is styled with thin handwritten letters for a subtle look.

Lea Michele

Lea Michele has two lines of text on the right side of her rib cage reading “I love you more” and “if you say so” as a reminder of the last conversation that she ever had with her fiance Cory Monteith before he died of a drug overdose on July 13, 2013.

“I love you more” is the last thing that she ever said to him and she’s thankful to have ended things on such a positive note, telling Seventeen “I spoke to a woman who had lost her son, and she mentioned how grateful she was that the words she said to her son before he died were ‘I love you.’ Mine were as well.”

The last words that her said to her were “if you say so” in response to her. She wrote a song called “If You Say So” about his passing which contains the lyrics “And I can’t get the last words that you said / Can’t get those words out of my head” and “You said, I love you girl / I said, I love you more / Then a breath, a pause, you said / If you say so.”

Becky G

Becky G has a series of Roman numerals “X·XXVII·MCMXCIX·IV·XVIII·MMI·I·III·MMIII” tattooed on her spine which represent the birthdays of her three siblings. She got the tattoo from artist Dr Woo in July 2018.

Becky G is the oldest of four children and was born on March 2, 1997. She has two little brothers and one little sister.

X·XXVII·MCMXCIX is her brother Frankie‘s birth date October 27, 1999. “You, Alex and Steph mean everything to me. I’m so thankful you were all brought into my life. Being an only child would be HORRIBLE,” she wrote to him on a happy birthday instagram post. “I’m so proud of you. I love you so much brother.”

IV·XVIII·MMI is her brother Alex‘s birth date April 18, 2001. Alex is autistic so their relationship hasn’t always been the easiest, but she is grateful for all of the lessons that she has learned from it. She once wrote about him: “He is so wise beyond his years yet has the most innocent heart. He is one of a kind and truly amazing. I don’t anyone else who is as genuine and honest as him. My little brother was diagnosed with autism when he was very young, he has over come all the obstacles of a child with autism with a smile on his face and lots of hugs to give to us when we would see times were hard for him. He has made life for me and the rest of my family so much brighter. There aren’t enough words to describe how blessed and thankful I am to have this kid in my life. I am lucky to call him my brother.”

I·III·MMIII is her sister Stephanie‘s birth date January 3, 2003. She has written to Stephi: “I love you more than words. Although you’re younger than me I look up to you in many ways. There are countless things that come to mind when I think of you but the top two are how selfless and caring you are sister.”

Katy Perry

Katy Perry has gotten a tattoo for each of her albums when she’s near the end of her touring cycle. With Witness: The Tour winding down, she finally got her Witness tattoo on August 17, 2018, a few days before the end of the six-continent world tour that started back in September 2017.

Her previous three tattoos — a strawberry, a peppermint, and a prism — have all been on her ankles and have all had a very similar style, turning symbols from the album into colorful cartoon characters with cutesy eyes. But everything is different with this tattoo: different tattoo artist, different body part, and a completely different design style.

She flew Los Angeles-based artist Dr Woo out to Sydney Australia to tattoo herself and many members of her crew. He is known for his intricate fine-line designs, and he applied his signature style to this tattoo. Katy had said a while ago that her Witness tattoo would likely be “some form of an eye,” and Dr Woo’s design is that, but there’s also a lot more going on in it.

The pupil of the eye has a ring around it to look like a planet and the white parts of the eye are drawn with architectural curved lines through them. The whole design has a very outer space feel, looking almost like a spaceship or a satellite, which is reinforced by the twinkling star above it. But the eye also has a little teardrop in the corner.

Katy chose an eye for her tour tattoo since eyes have been the most prominent symbol of her Witness era. The album cover features Katy with an eye in her mouth and eye motifs have been used for her stage backdrops and costumes. The elongated eye shape of her tattoo, with the whites separated from the iris, is copied directly from the eye-shaped video screens behind the stage.

The Saturn-like planet in her tattoo is also inspired by the tour’s stage art. Katy performed the song “Thinking of You” each night while flying through the air on top of a planet.

Lili Reinhart

Lili Reinhart got a beautiful gray rose tattoo on her forearm from artist Dr. Woo in June 2017 which is a symbol of love. She told People Style:

I love roses, and I don’t want to stay it’s that basic, but also I got the rose to represent that I’m kind of a warrior for love. I wear my heart on my sleeve. I’ve learned a lot about myself in the past year and I’ve learned that I really just — I do wear my heart on my sleeve and that’s what it represents a little bit, that I love love.

Lili Reinhart

Lili Reinhart has a tattoo of an arrow on her forearm which “represents fighting through depression and anxiety.” She has struggled with mental health problems since she was 12 years old and has used both therapy and medications to help mange it. She encourages others to take control of their own mental health and seek out the help they need, advising them not to give up on themselves. She told People Style:

“The arrow represents mental health awareness. I talk a lot about depression and anxiety and my own struggles with it, so I wanted to get it. I saw a quote, it’s kind of like…’an arrow can only go forward by being pulled back, so when you’re going through a hard time, being pulled back, it only means you’re about to experience something greater and bigger.’ So that’s what that represents to me. That was a mantra that I would say to myself when I was going through a hard time, that it it only means it’s going to get better.”

Lili had her own moment of being pulled back to move forward in landing the iconic role of Betty Cooper on Riverdale“Riverdale came into my life when I was going through the worst depression I had ever experienced. And in the end it completely saved me,” she tweeted. The aspiring actress had moved to Los Angeles on her own at age 18 to pursue her career, but her anxiety kept getting worse. Eventually things got so bad that she couldn’t stay and had to move back home to focus on her mental health. At home she switched to a new medication and resumed seeing her old therapist to work on rebuilding herself. She actually recorded her first audition tape for Rivderdale while at home but got rejected. When she was healthy enough to move back to Los Angeles it was with a renewed fervor. She went to an in-person audition for Betty Cooper and landed the role.

The worst times in her life had led to her big break, but when she got the arrow tattoo she didn’t actually know yet that everything would turn out alright. It was perhaps more a symbol of faith that she desperately needed at that time. She got the tattoo from artist Dr Woo in June 2015, right before she left Los Angeles. “Thank you, @dr_woo_ssc! I waited for months and finally got my tattoo today (second one to date),” she wrote.

Actress Mädchen Amick, who plays Lili’s mother Alice Cooper on Riverdale, has a matching tattoo from the same artist, but it’s purely coincidental. Mädchen’s arrow is a symbol of her zodiac sign Sagittarius. They noticed the matching tattoos the first time they met during a rehearsal for Riverdale and instantly bonded over it.
