Birthday Tattoos

Zoë Kravitz

Zoe Kravitz has a tiny tattoo on the back of her right arm with the date “11-16-67” to represent her mom’s November 16, 1967 birth date. Her mother Lisa Bonet (who legally changed her name to Lilakoi Moon but still goes by Lisa Bonet professionally) is an actress who is best known for her role as Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show. Zoe sees her mom as an inspiration on both a personal and a professional level, telling Elle:

“She kind of stumbled into that world. It wasn’t a conscious choice (a) to be an actress, (b) to be a famous actress, and (c) to be—she shook things up—a model for so many young women. The beautiful thing about her is that she just thought a certain way and lived her life that way.”

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez celebrated her best friend Courtney Barry’s 26th birthday by getting two different matching tattoos with her. Both girls were part of a group of four friends that got matching “4” tattoos, and the two of them got matching rib tattoos as well.

They both got the number “1” on their sides to symbolizes that they are each other’s number one best friend and the one person that they can always turn to.  Selena wrote:

“My actual #1 @courtneyjbarry you are an incredible woman. The way you handle life’s most confusing moments is indescribable and graceful. You are moved by the littlest stories to the most heartbreaking ones, you will give someone your perfume if they say you smell nice, you are freaking hilarious and always stand firm in your faith, a loving sister, an amazing friend and a beautiful daughter. You are the definition of FEARFULLY and WONDERFULLY made baby!”

Becky G

Becky G has a series of Roman numerals “X·XXVII·MCMXCIX·IV·XVIII·MMI·I·III·MMIII” tattooed on her spine which represent the birthdays of her three siblings. She got the tattoo from artist Dr Woo in July 2018.

Becky G is the oldest of four children and was born on March 2, 1997. She has two little brothers and one little sister.

X·XXVII·MCMXCIX is her brother Frankie‘s birth date October 27, 1999. “You, Alex and Steph mean everything to me. I’m so thankful you were all brought into my life. Being an only child would be HORRIBLE,” she wrote to him on a happy birthday instagram post. “I’m so proud of you. I love you so much brother.”

IV·XVIII·MMI is her brother Alex‘s birth date April 18, 2001. Alex is autistic so their relationship hasn’t always been the easiest, but she is grateful for all of the lessons that she has learned from it. She once wrote about him: “He is so wise beyond his years yet has the most innocent heart. He is one of a kind and truly amazing. I don’t anyone else who is as genuine and honest as him. My little brother was diagnosed with autism when he was very young, he has over come all the obstacles of a child with autism with a smile on his face and lots of hugs to give to us when we would see times were hard for him. He has made life for me and the rest of my family so much brighter. There aren’t enough words to describe how blessed and thankful I am to have this kid in my life. I am lucky to call him my brother.”

I·III·MMIII is her sister Stephanie‘s birth date January 3, 2003. She has written to Stephi: “I love you more than words. Although you’re younger than me I look up to you in many ways. There are countless things that come to mind when I think of you but the top two are how selfless and caring you are sister.”

Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa got this rose tattoo on her right bicep in the wee hours of the morning following her concert in Paris on April 3, 2018.  Tattoo artist Madame Buraka has a very distinctive style that combines 90s tribal designs, graffiti, and minimalist line drawings.  While the lines on Dua’s tattoo may look abstract at first glance, there’s actually an number “95” hidden in the leaves to represent her birth year.

Iggy Azalea

Iggy Azalea has gone through a lot of trouble to remove her ex A$AP Rocky’s name from her left pinkie finger. She initially tattooed an “X” through it because her hectic touring schedule didn’t give her enough time for laser removal. She finally had a lull in her career in 2015 which gave her time for frequent laser sessions. Her engagement to NBA player Nick Young also gave her a sense of urgency. “I don’t want to wear a wedding ring with tattoos about my ex under it. It’s being lasered and has been for months,” she tweeted.

Her A$AP tribute spanned three fingers, with the words “Live” “Love” and “A$AP” each on their own.  Iggy had all three lasered, but the removal was trickiest on her pinkie.  She tattooed a black box over the whole name which may have helped give an even result but it also made it more difficult.  Its location on the outside of her hand also meant that this tattoo wasn’t subject to the same amount of friction as the ones between her fingers.  She manged to get her middle and ring fingers light enough for a new “Digital Distortion” tattoo but continued with laser sessions on her pinkie.  In 2016 she told Music Choice:

I’ve actually just spent the last eight months going through a very painful laser tattoo removal process….Be very careful with what you get. And do not get your ex-boyfriend’s name or you might end up with a really long and really expensive painful trip to the dermatologist.

By 2017 she was finally able to cover the spot with a new tattoo that’s the same size as the previous one. It appears to be a number “7” for her June 7th birthday.

Danielle Bregoli

The number “1921” on the front of Danielle Bregoli’s right ankle goes along with the name “Josephine” behind it. It represents the birth year of her maternal great grandmother Josephine “JoJo” Radford, who was born on October 16, 1921. JoJo is still alive and well at 96 years old.

The placement of this tattoo and the gothic font of the letters are inspired by Rihanna’s “1988” tattoo, which represents the singer’s own birth year.
