Ruby Rose commemorated her relationship with partner Phoebe Dahl by getting this tattoo of a heart on her back with their names in it. She showed off the new tattoo in an April 1, 2014 instagram photo which she captioned “Whoops spelt romeo and juliet wrong oh well ;)” The couple announced their engagement a few weeks earlier after three months of dating.
Unfortunately they never made it down the aisle and broke up in December 2015. “[Phoebe] remains very dear to my heart. I will forever treasure our time together. I’m a better person because of the time we shared,” Ruby wrote on Twitter.
Ruby has yet to remove Phoebe’s name from the tattoo, though she has already altered it once — adding paint strokes all around the outside of the heart.
Ruby Rose has a blue swallow tattooed on the back of her neck. Swallows are a common traditional sailor tattoo representing freedom.
This is one of Ruby’s older tattoos and she has had it re-worked. Pictured top-right is the original tattoo in 2010, which was smaller and was just an outline. The cover-up is filled in with shades of blue and looks more cartoonish.
Ruby Rose has two boxing-related tattoos on the right side of her upper back. The first part of the tattoo is a tribute to her godfather Lionel Rose, an accomplished professional boxer who was the first indigenous Australian to win a world boxing title. Lionel passed away in May 2011 at the age of 62. That same month, Ruby visited Sydney Australia tattoo artist Rhys Gordon to get a tribute piece. She got a tattoo on her right shoulder blade of a pair of boxing gloves and a laurel wreath with Lionel’s name at the bottom.
Ruby, whose birth name is Ruby Rose Lagenheim, was named after Lionel Rose but is not biologically related to him. He and her father were close friends. Back in 2012 Lionel’s family stirred up controversy by saying that they hadn’t had any relationship with Ruby since her parents’ divorce and alleging that she was using the name “Rose” to further her own career by association to Lionel. Though it’s true that Ruby didn’t have any contact with Lionel later in her life, she says that seeing him as a young girl had a major impact on her.
“I met Lionel five or six times as a young tacker and he was a huge inspiration to me,” she told the Herald Sun. “I didn’t have a dad. Those trips to Lionel’s, while very few and far between, were everything. We had a crummy life, we didn’t have any money, dad was like `how’s it going?, but Lionel had a real impact on me…He passed away as my godfather. They can’t take that away from me…I love him – and if he’s looking down on me from heaven, I know he would be proud of the things I do.”
One of the thing that Ruby did honor Lionel’s legacy was to train as an amateur boxer herself. In November 2012 she added onto the tattoo with two yellow lightning bolts and “The Thorn” which is her own boxing nickname. She entered a few amateur fights around the time that she got the tattoo, but it seems that since then she’s put her own boxing gloves to rest.
Vanessa Martinez has a tiny crescent Moon inked in black and red on her middle finger on the left hand.
Teyana Taylor has a tattoo on her right butt cheek of three gummy bears in red, yellow, and green which are the pan-African colors. Together they form the flag of Guinea.
Tasia Alexis has a hibiscus flower tattooed inside her right ear.
Vanessa Martinez has a space inspired tattoo on her left forearm. This ink was the forth she did and it interconnects with a triangle form filled with crystals done at the same time.
The triangle represents femininity while the space reminds her of the fascination she has for space and her younger idea of becoming an astronaut. There she has the Sun and the Moon and her favorite planet – Saturn – also three small circles at the bottom, because “3” is an important number in the Universe.
Halsey got this match on her forearm as a matching tattoo with three of her fans in May 2015. In an interview she explained that she picked the lucky fans randomly on Twitter. She relates to her fans, most of whom are around the same age as her, and wanted to give them something more than just a hang-out session.
I got match-ing [get it ?] tattoos with them, and that’s the joke. I also told them that an unlit match represents not playing all your good cards like you have one. It’s unlit and I think what that represents is potential. You can strike at any moment. And I told them that when they feel like they’ve reached a point of potential in their life, or they feel like they’ve done something that they wanted to do for a long time, I told them that they should go back, get a flame added to it, and then let me know when they do, because it’s a significant moment. And I told them I would do the same, so I’m just holding out for that moment because I don’t know when I’m going to reach my potential. But hopefully one day something will be enough for me.
Halsey and her friend Sean got matching Venus and Mars tattoos on their elbows in July 2015. When asked about the meaning of her planet tattoo Halsey replied:
“My friend Sean is an Aries so his ruling planet is Mars and mine is Venus and his birthday falls EXACTLY on my half birthday so we got each other’s ruling planets!”
Musician Blackbear also has a similar black and red planet tattoo as part of his left arm sleeve. Halsey shared a picture of their two tattoos together, but it seems that the matching is just a coincidence since he had his tattoo before she got hers.
