Inspirational Tattoos

Maren Morris

Maren Morris’ back tattoo says “It’s a wondrous world of ridiculous things / but nothing so rare as the love that it brings”  which is a line from the song “Christina” by folk singer-songwriter Patty Griffin.  There’s actually a tiny error in the tattoo since the second line should start “with” instead of “but.”

She got this tattoo in April 2013 after putting a lot of thought into planning it.  She shared a photo on instagram back in August 2012 where she edited the lyrics onto her back in two different fonts, trying to decide which she liked better.

Patty Griffin is one of her influences and musical idols.  “Going to see Patty Griffin at the Ryman this evening. I may never come back down,” she tweeted before seeing her in concert in October 2013.

Noah Cyrus

Noah Cyrus tattooed the motto “stand still” on her arm in honor of her father Billy Ray Cyrus, who she says “always taught me to stand still when things get too crazy.”  He also has a song called “Stand Still.”

Her dad made the tattoo extra meaningful by getting his own to match — with Noah’s encouragement!  She got her tattoo in June 2017 and Billy Ray got his a month later in July 2017.  She told Vogue:

Something floated around from my dad’s side of the family is just to stand still. It just means that when everything is so hectic in your life and you don’t know what to do, just stand still and wait for your heart to tell you what to do, and it will take you to the right place. So, to stand still and take a breath in. It really does help me in certain situations. My dad and I have got it tattooed on our arms.

Chiara Ferragni

Chiara Ferragni has the inspirational quote “I swear I’ll never give in / I refuse” on the back of her upper left arm in her own handwriting.  These lyrics come from the song “Best of You” by The Foo Fighters, who she described as “one of my forever favourite bands.”  She wrote on her website The Blonde Salad:

It’s a sentence with such a big meaning to me, from one of my favourite songs, written so thin that it looks like it is only written by pen. I’ve been wanting this tattoo for months and in Los Angeles I finally made my decision and made it.

She got the tattoo in April 2012.  It gives a strong message to always keep fighting even when faced with adversity.  She told Glamour:

My favorite [tattoo] I got done on my last night in L.A. after Coachella by Dr. Woo, who is super good, and it’s in my handwriting; I just wrote it on paper.

Though that was back in 2013 when she only had five tattoos, so it might not be her favorite anymore.

Chiara Ferragni

Chiara Ferragni got her third tattoo in April 2011.  The phrase “Ode Alla Vita,” meaning “Ode to Life” in her native Italian, is the title of a poem by Brazilan writer Martha Medeiros (though it has often been misattributed to Chilean poet Pablo Neruda). She wrote on her blog:

My third tattoo: the sentence “Ode alla vita” on the right arm, to always remind me how important it is to live at our best each day, and to celebrate a friend who used to share with me the passion for this poem.

Alisha Boe

“13 Reasons Why” stars Alisha Boe and Tommy Dorfman have matching semi colon tattoos with Selena Gomez which signifies they stand in solidarity with those who suffer from suicidal thoughts or have attempted suicide.
The semicolon is a symbol of new beginnings popularized by the suicide prevention and mental health organization Project Semicolon. Boe and Dorfman posted images of their tattoos on social media to pay tribute to Project Semicolon‘s founder, Amy Bleuel, who committed suicide on March 24 at age 31.
In a separate post, Dorfman discussed his affinity for the movement, further detailing his personal struggle with addiction and depression:

“Today was a magical day. Another day to be grateful to be alive. Alisha, Selena, and I went together to get ; tattoos. The ; symbol stands for an end of one thought and a beginning of another. Instead of a period, authors use the semicolon to continue a sentence. For us, it means a beginning of another chapter in life, in lieu of ending your life. I struggled with addiction and depression issues through high school and early college. I reached out and asked for help. At the time, I thought my life was over, I thought I’d never live past the age of 21. Today I’m grateful to be alive, in this new chapter of life in recovery, standing with my colleagues and friends, making art that helps other people. If you’re struggling, if you feel suicidal, I urge you to click the link in my bio. Ask for help. Start a new chapter with the support of others. ?⛅️?☀️and RIP Amy Bleul, who started the semicolon movement.”

Cierra Ramirez

Cierra Ramirez appeared at Wango Tango on June 2, 2018 with a never before seen tattoo on her arm. The fresh ink is of the French saying “La Vie en Rose” which means “Life in Pink.” It is an analogy for seeing things optimistically, as through rose-colored glasses. The words are tattooed in thin capital letters on the back of her upper right arm.

Bea Miller

Bea Miller and fellow pop singer Kennedi got matching tattoos  in March 2018 that say “it only couldve been what it was” with the text wrapping around their elbows.  The two girls seem to have come up with this phrase on their own — perhaps it’s a lyric to a future song?  It speaks to fate and destiny as well as the pointlessness of dwelling on things in the past that we can’t change.

Tattoo parlor Generation 8 Tattoo shared of a photo of Bea’s completed tattoo next to the paper that used as their template, where we can see that it printed out using a computer handwriting font similar to Daddy’s Hand with no apostrophe and no capital letters for a uniform look.

Woah Vicky has an uplifting Christian tattoo on the inside of her right elbow.  Four minimalist red ink symbols – a sun, waves, mountains, and a cross – represent the lyrics “There is hope, should oceans rise and mountains fall, He’ll never fail” from Hillsong United’s song “Take Heart.” Artist Noel Shiveley designed the symbols which are a popular tattoo.

Bea Miller

Bea Miller added this handwritten tattoo between her ghost and maple leaf in December 2017. It says “we are all going” which is a line from the John Green novel Looking for Alaska. She shared a picture of the tattoo on her instagram along with a photo of her copy of the book, showing the context for the quote. The paragraph in the book says:

We are all going, I thought, and it applies to turtles and turtlenecks, Alaska the girl and Alaska the place, because nothing can last, not even the earth itself. The Buddha said that suffering was caused by desire, we’d learned, and that the cessation of desire meant the cessation of suffering. When you stopped wishing things wouldn’t fall apart, you’d stop suffering when they did.

It is about accepting that we cannot change our own mortality and the impermanence of everything and everyone around us.
