Becky G

Becky G got a dragonfly tattoo on the left side of her ribs in September 2016. The delicate but intricate inking shows artist Doctor Woo’s signature style. She loves his work but had a hard time scheduling a session with the in-demand artist. “Just waiting for an opening with the tattoo artist I’ve wanted it from forever,” she tweeted.

The dragonfly represents the spirit of her deceased cousin Ceci, who was six years older than Becky and passed away when Becky was only three. She opened up about her cousin on E!’s Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry, describing how one of the hardest times in her life was when her family lost their house when she was nine. “That’s when I turned to who I consider my guardian angel til this day. I lost her when I was really young. She was around the same age. She was just always with me, still after she passed away. She was with me, I could see her and I could feel her.” She had a framed photograph of cousin Ceci on her nightstand in that house and it’s one of the only things that she kept from that bedroom.

“If you look at the frame it has dragonflies on it, and I’ve always connected her to dragonflies. Just the other day I was on stage and I was about to perform in front of like 50,000 people and there was a dragonfly circling around me. I got very overwhelmed with emotions because I was very — I was at my limit, I was exhausted, I didn’t want to continue. And the dragonfly kind of just changed everything.”

Bruna Marquezine

Bruna Marquezine’s second tattoo was a simple black cross on her left side, which is a tribute to her Christian faith. “The cross is because I have faith in God. I love it, and I like to look at it and to remember Him and how wonderful He is to me,” she tweeted.  It’s also a reminder of her mother, who taught her to believe in God.  My mother always spoke highly of love and God to me,” she says.  She had the tattoo re-done by artist Adao Rosa at Nautica Tattoo in July 2013 while getting a new tattoo of an anchor on her ankle. Melanie Martinez

Melanie Martinez got this tattoo of a pink gumball machine on the center of chest from her favorite artist Lauren Winzer in January 2016.  She knew that she wanted to get a gumball machine, but deliberated a lot about the placement. Rihanna‘s goddess Isis tattoo inspired her to want a tattoo in the lower chest area, which she had previously written off as uncool. In an interview with Fuse before getting it done, she explained:

I want to get a gumball machine. I’m still debating where. I think it’s cool — and I didn’t think it was cool for a long time — but I really want to get a tattoo here [pointing to her abdomen]. It’s really hardcore and I know it’s hardcore.  I’m not like Rihanna, you know?  I don’t know if I could pull that off. I’m hardly ever showing this area of my body. But I don’t know, I feel like I’m growing up and I’m going to turn 21 soon, and I might as well do something fun and — I don’t know. I might get a gumball machine here. We’ll see.

It is the only tattoo in a hidden area which she has showed off on social media, but we suspect that she has more based on the number of tattoos that she has cited in interviews.

Niykee Heaton

Niykee Heaton got a red ink tattoo in the memory of her sister who passed away after a long cancer fight.
“Father forgive them, for they know not what they do. the rulers sneered at Him saying, “if thou be the king, save thyself”
I’ve had to forgive those who have caused me great agony & knowing that no one else could have possibly saved me, I have saved myself. I have prevailed… against all odds. These words, are for you, my angel… placed in the same spot your scars marred your belly… the transplants that scarred your precious, little body. I couldn’t save you, but I saved myself… #rip”, she captioned her tattoo Instagram post.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato’s rib cage tattoo saw it’s third incarnation in September 2016, courtesy of artist Bang Bang.  With each update the tattoo has grown larger and now the huge piece covers her whole side.

The tattoo began with the lyrics “you make me beautiful” from the Bethany Dillon song “Beautiful.” This was Demi’s very first tattoo which she got when she was only sixteen.  The tattoo has religious meaning to Demi, reminding her that she can find confidence in knowing that God has made her perfect.  A few years later, in 2011, she added a pair of feathers behind the writing.

For the latest update, Bang Bang drew a dream catcher around the lyrics, using the previous pair of feathers as part of the dreamcatcher while also adding three more smaller feathers floating at the bottom and some strands of beads.  None of the beads or feathers are attached to each other, giving the design a light and ephemeral feeling.
