Mom Tattoos

Monica Brown

While in Miami on vacation in May 2017, Monica visited artist Luke Dyson at The Lab Tattoo and got a portrait of her mother on her right forearm. She already had her mom’s name “Marilyn” on her wrist so she placed her mother’s face just above it. “This is one of my favorite pictures of my mother from 1982. She isn’t a body art person. She will surely tell me I’m nuts. LOL I’m overjoyed at the turn out!! Exactly like the pic. SHE really is EVERYTHING to me,” she wrote on her instagram.

Zoë Kravitz

Zoe Kravitz has a tiny tattoo on the back of her right arm with the date “11-16-67” to represent her mom’s November 16, 1967 birth date. Her mother Lisa Bonet (who legally changed her name to Lilakoi Moon but still goes by Lisa Bonet professionally) is an actress who is best known for her role as Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show. Zoe sees her mom as an inspiration on both a personal and a professional level, telling Elle:

“She kind of stumbled into that world. It wasn’t a conscious choice (a) to be an actress, (b) to be a famous actress, and (c) to be—she shook things up—a model for so many young women. The beautiful thing about her is that she just thought a certain way and lived her life that way.”

Kelsea Ballerini

Kelsea Ballerini has a tattoo on her ribcage which says “Love. love.”  The word “love” appears twice because it’s in the handwriting of each of her parents.

The tattoo also celebrates a major milestone in her career, her debut single “Love Me Like You Mean It” hitting number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.  She was the first female solo artist since Carrie Underwood to have her debut single top that chart and the first ever to achieve that feat while on an independent label.  She told Ty Kelly and Chuck:

The week that ‘Love Me Like You Mean It’ went No. 1, I received letters from my mom and dad. I was in New Orleans, and I took the letters and got ‘love’ tattooed in my mom and dad’s handwriting.
