Matching Tattoos

Beyoncé

Beyoncé Knowles has an “IV” tattoo on her left ring finger which is a matching tattoo with her husband Jay-Z. The tattoo has many meanings for the couple.

IV is the Roman Numeral for the number four. Both Beyoncé and Jay-Z have birthdays on the fourth of the month: she was born on September 4, 1981 and he was born on December 4, 1969. The couple were married on April 4, 2008. Additionally Beyoncé’s mother has a birthday on January 4th.

Beyoncé generally does not wear her $5 million engagement ring, even though she describes it as her favorite piece of jewelry. “I feel like [the ring] is for me when I’m not working. And when I’m working, it’s too personal,” she said in an interview. “Even though it’s fading I have a little tattoo that is here always, because I know I would be working and I wouldn’t be able to wear it all the time. So I have this.”

Beyoncé and Jay-Z named their daughter Blue Ivy Carter, giving even more significance to the letters IV.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato faith elbow tattoo

Demi Lovato tattooed the word “faith” on her right arm, below her elbow, in December 2011. This is a matching tattoo with her friend Lauren Martin, whom she met in treatment at Timberline Knolls.

Demi’s father isn’t a fan of her tattoos and she has a history of getting tattoos without telling him. She didn’t tell him about her “faith” or finger tattoos. However she plans to keep getting more tattoos despite his disapproval. When asked if she was thinking about a new tattoo, Demi responded “Always! I’m like ‘what can I get next’ and my dad’s like ‘nooooo!’…He does not approve of them.” (more…)

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato has a tattoo of red lips on left wrist which she got in July 2011 as a matching tattoo with friends Hanna Beth Merjos, Ivey Ensley and Lauren Pietra. Ivey and Hanna Beth had the kiss placed on their collarbones. The tattoo is of Ivey’s lips.

This playful tattoo stands in contrast to some of Demi’s other ink with much more serious meanings. She told Hollywood Life “I got like a kiss mark, and it’s just like a friendship tattoo and also it kinda reminds me not to take myself too seriously. I got like a fun tattoo rather than all these other ones that are so serious.”

You would have thought that having her feather ear tattoo turn out poorly would have taught Demi a lesson about getting tattoos in non-professional environments, but apparently it did not. She told MTV “It was also on Warped Tour. In a tour bus. Another one, different year,” while grimacing. In another interview, she said “It was just a spur of the moment stupid decision.”

Demi Lovato has come to hate this tattoo and joked that it looks like a vagina. Those comments upset tattoo artist Ashley McMullen, who claimed that Demi was drunk and rude when she got the tattoo, didn’t pay for it, and didn’t give Ashley any publicity. She put the blame for the bad tattoo on Demi, saying she gave Demi what she “specifically asked for…it is not my fault you wanted a pair of red lips on your wrist next to your upside down tattoo.”

She finally had the tattoo covered with a rose in April 2015. (more…)

Avril Lavigne

Avril Lavigne La Vie En Rose arm tattoo

Avril Lavigne’s biggest tattoo yet is the writing on her left forearm which says “La vie en Rose / Vivre le moment présent”, which is French for “Life in Pink / Living in the moment.” She got this tattoo with her husband Chad Kroeger, though they weren’t yet dating at the time. Avril and Chad were working together writing songs for her self-titled album when she suggested the tattoos. Avril told Chelsea Lately “When I met him I was really surprised that he didn’t have any tattoos, so the second day in the studio I’m like, ‘I’m so getting you your first tattoo.’” The tattoos weren’t intended to be matching — originally Avril had just the first line “La vie en Rose” and Chad had “Vivre le moment présent,” but she later added the second line in order to match his. Hayley Williams

Hayley Williams

The three members of Paramore – singer Hayley Williams, guitarist Taylor York, and bassist Jeremy Davis – all got matching tattoos in August 2011 to represent their unity as a band. Hayley and Jeremy both got it on their wrists while Taylor’s is a bit further up his arm, closer to his elbow.

Explaining the design, Hayley says “we just really wanted something simple that describes the three of us and the people around us.” The band drew a number of designs and decided on this one of a black rectangle with three white bars to represent the three band members. “It’s so simple, it really couldn’t get any more simple, but that’s the point,” Hayley explains. This logo was then used as the cover for Paramore’s Singles 7″ box set and digital release, the band’s first release a three-piece unit.

In a KROQ interview, Hayley joked that they can’t add any new members to the band because of the tattoos: “we just got tattoos that have only three white bars in them, so if we ever add any new members we’re screwed!” (more…)

Hayley Williams

Hayley Williams has heart with patches right below and behind the razor tattoo on her right ankle. Hayley hasn’t spoken much about this tattoo other than to say that she got it while on tour with her husband’s band New Found Glory. “This is from a tour that I did,” she says, “our band wasn’t on it, but I just hung out. With New Found Glory, I mean all kinds of bands, a lot of my friends.”

It seems that a group of people on the tour – New Found Glory’s fall 2008 “Easycore” headlining tour – all got these matching tattoos together. Above the heart are the letters “HHT.” We thought for a long time that it said “HHTM,” but artist Shauncey Fury who did these tattoos cleared this up in a comment in which he wrote: “I actually did the patched heart on Hayley. I was on that tour and we all just got a hurtin’ heart. The letters are HHT for hurtin’ hearts tour. The “M” is actually just a burst behind the right side of the heart.” Another commenter explained the origins of the phrase: “‘Hurtin’ hearts’ is a term Ian from NFG would say when people were being mean or rude to each other on the tour.”
