SZA

In November 2015, SZA got this tattoo on her collarbone of a maple log and leaf as a tribute to the town of Maplewood, NJ where she grew up.  She told Complex:

I was born in St. Louis, but I’m from Maplewood, New Jersey. Maplewood is completely different than the rest of New Jersey. It’s very small. It’s quietly affluent but more lowkey. Lauryn Hill is from my town though. It was predominantly white, Jewish. I went to school with all white kids and my Girl Scout troop everyone was white. I was being the token black everyday.

Ash Costello

Ash Costello got this tattoo of a coffin on her right forearm from artist Danny Anchor at Illuminati Tattoo Lounge in January 2016.  The number “714” inside the coffin is the area code for the greater Los Angeles, California region, where she grew up.

“I have lots of Anaheim pride and I don’t know how I’ve never gotten a ‘714’ tattoo — the area code of where I live,” she told Fuse, “I’ve always wanted one. It’s just there’s always some other crazy idea that I have that I want to get first. So I actually really want to get ‘714’ tattooed on me.”

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus and her best friend Wayne Coyne got matching tattoos in September 2015 which say “OKIE” — a derogatory slang term for a person from Oklahoma. Miley is from Tennessee but has spent a lot of time in Oklahoma recently alongside Wayne, who is an Oklahoma native. She got the tattoo while working on her new album at Wayne’s recording studio in Oklahoma City.

The pair stopped by No Regrets Tattoo in Oklahoma City on September 10, 2015. Wayne and Miley both got the tattoo in the same spot on the back of their upper right arms, just above the elbow. Their tattoos are an interesting color which seems to be a mix of red and purple ink. (more…)

Marzia Bisognin

Marzia Bisognin got a tattoo of a lemon tree on the back of her upper left arm in honor of her father and the lemon tree in her childhood home which he cared for. This is one of two tattoos which she got from artist Katja Graaf in October 2016. On her blog, she explained:

The first one I got, today, is a lemon tree. My dad is my hero, he is just so kind and was always (and still is) an example for me. Considering that he grew up in a poor family, and didn’t have access to many things and didn’t complete his education, he is one of the smartest and strongest people I know.

He is very cultured, you can ask him anything and he will most likely know the answer to it. He never shows off. He managed to set up his business, becoming successful, providing for our family.

He is so good in many things, maybe that’s why I never felt the need to select one path for myself, because I could see him do all these different things: sure, he has a main job, but he has plenty of other passions, like archery, travelling, and gardening – to name a few.

He always took care of our garden, making it look like it came from a book. One of the trees I liked the most, out of all the plants he cares for, is the lemon tree. It looks so quirky to me, growing from a small pot, so big and beautiful.

Anytime I go back home to Italy, I see them (he has 3 now) and to remind me of my dad, and everything I look up to, I wanted the lemon tree to be tattooed on me.

Emily Ratajkowski

Emily Ratajkowski’s first – and so far only – tattoo is on the back of her left ankle. “It’s a window, got it when I was 18. I always forget its there!” she tweeted.  It also symbolizes a feeling of home. Emily studied art at UCLA before dropping out to pursue her modeling career and the window shape is inspired by her own artistic collages.

LIGHTS Poxleitner

Lights’ very first tattoos were the sparrows on her hips which she got as a symbol of moving away from home.  She explains: “I had just moved away from home and I was 18. I was living in Vancouver at the time and I moved to Toronto, so it’s a big move, it’s like L.A. to New York. I was kind facing the world on my own for the first time and my parents probably would have never let me get a tattoo but I moved out, like ‘I’m a free bird.’ So I got [on my hips] — it’s super cliché, but I got two sparrows. From this hole in the wall place and I was underage. The guy wasn’t that great. But it was exciting because it was my first tattoo.”

Why a sparrow? “I never get anything that doesn’t mean something.  The sparrow travels the world but always knows how to get home. And a sparrow is a love bird. They find their partner and they stay with them forever. They’re a really loyal bird. It just had a really cool story behind it.”
