Bang Bang Tattoos

Demi Lovato

These five Roman Numerals on Demi Lovato’s left side represent the birthdates of her family members. She got the tattoo at Bang Bang’s New York City studio late at night following a concert.  Though she first revealed the ink in a twitter picture in November 2014, it wasn’t brand new at the time. In a throwback instagram post she mentioned getting the tattoo done in the summer of 2014, but it seems most likely that it was on October 27, 2014 following her Demi World Tour performance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

VIII VIII MCMLXII – 8/8/1962 – August 8, 1962 is the birthday of her mother Dianna De La Garza (nee Dianna Lee Smith).

II IV MCMLXXXVIII – 2/4/1988 – February 4, 1988 is for her older sister Dallas Lovato.  She is an actress and voice actress who has had minor roles in a number of movies.

XII XXVIII MMI – 12/27/2001 – December 28, 2001 is the birth date of her younger half-sister Madison De La Garza who is the child of Demi’s mother and her step-father. Madison portrayed Gabrielle Solis’ (Eva Longoria) daughter Juanita Solis on the TV show Desperate Housewives.

II XIV MCMLXIII – 2/14/1963 – February 14, 1963 is for her step-father Eddie De La Garza. He has been a big part of Demi’s life since marrying her mother when Demi was young.

X XXIII MCMLX – 10/23/1960 – October 23, 1960 is for her biological father Patrick Lovato, who died in 2013.  Demi has had a complicated relationship with him due in large part to mental health issues, but he still hold a special place in her heart. “I was very conflicted when he passed, because he was abusive,” Demi says. “He was mean, but he wanted to be a good person. And he wanted to have his family.”

Not included in the tattoo is Demi’s older half-sister Amber, who is the child of Demi’s estranged father. Amber has not been a part of her life — Demi didn’t even know she existed until 2012.

Jahan Yousaf

In July 2016, Jahan Yousaf and her sister Yasmine got matching neck tattoo which are half of a yin-yang symbol in a paisley style. Artist Bang Bang told Rolling Stone “One of them is gonna get a positive image. The other’s gonna get the negative. So they kinda match and go together. When they look at each other, you’ll see both sides.” The yin-yang represents the duality of opposites.

Yasmine Yousaf has a paisley design on her neck. It is half of a yin-yang symbol Taijitu - Small (CW).svg, and her sister Jahan has the other half. “We’re doing a yin-yang, but in a paisley style. We’re each getting fifty percent of the yin and yang,” Yasmine told Rolling Stone. The yin and yang is a Chinese symbol which represents the duality of opposite forces.

They got the ink done by artist Bang Bang, who has tattooed Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, and many other stars. “We’re big fans of his work, so it fucking awesome to be tattooed by him,” she says. She and Jahan both placed the tattoos next to their 6-8-10 neck tattoos, which is another matching tattoo that they share.

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner has the phonetic pronunciation of “sanity” inked on her right hip.  It is written as \‘sa-nə-tē\ using the Merriam-Webster dictionary respelling system.  The tattoo is a reminder to stay sane despite the crazy world that she lives in.  She told V Magazine:

“There was a time when I got [that tattoo] that I felt a little bit like I was going insane.  Or, I was going to.”

“I thought about it for a while. I just like the word ‘Sanity’—just stay sane through it all.  A lot of young stars who grow up in the spotlight have a really hard time. I didn’t want that to be me.”

The red ink tattoo was done in November 2015. “I needed it at the time,” she says.  At that time her overly plump lips were the punchline of many jokes (she more recently told Allure “I definitely made my lips a little too big at one point”) and she had finally come clean about the fact that she’d gotten injections.  She was also starting to speak out about the bullying that she faced in order to help her fans, along with sharing other people’s stories through her anti-bullying Instagram campaign #IAmMoreThan.  Growing up with constant criticism left Kylie struggling to discover her true sense of self.  She told Interview Magazine:

“Ever since I was 9, since the show started, there’s been so much bullying towards me.  Like, every single day I see something negative about me.  And it’s just completely torn me apart. I feel like I’ve lost so many amazing traits because I’ve listened to stupid people, ignorant people who are bullies.”

“I always just try to stay sane and not read comments.  It’s hard though.  You get interested.”

As for why she chose the dictionary-style \‘sa-nə-tē\” rather than simply writing the word, no one really knows.  Her tattoo artist Bang Bang explains “It’s a really easy tattoo to misinterpret, so I think that she wants to explain it on her own terms.”  Kylie got connected with the artist through her then-boyfriend Tyga, who knew one of Bang Bang’s repeat clients Chris Brown.  She and Bang Bang hit it off and she even tattooed her initial “K” with a crown on his leg. “We clicked right away. She had a really clear idea of what she wanted to get, so I got straight to work,” he says.  Kylie posted videos on her Snapchat of their tattoo session but waited a while before revealing what tattoo she got for herself.

She later updated this tattoo by added the word “before” in front of it.
