Handwriting Tattoos

Jacquie Lee

Jacquie Lee got this tattoo which says “all is vanity” on her right bicep in memory of Christina Grimmie, who had a tattoo of these same words on her forearm.  Both singers were contestants on The Voice — Jacquie finished third in Season 5 while Christina placed third in Season 6 — and they became friends while performing together on The Voice 2014 Tour. In a video, Jacqui says:

Honestly there are too many memories to count, and I miss them all.  I love her.  She was just an incredible person.

Christina was tragically murdered while signing autographs at a concert in Orlando on June 10, 2016 and Jacquie got her tattoo shortly after. It was first seen in an instagram photo on July 7th. Jacquie isn’t the only person to commemorate Christina’s life with this tattoo. On August 13th, members of Christina’s entourage including her brother Mark Grimmie, producer Stephen Rezza, stylist Audrey Brianne, hair and makeup artist Emily Christison, and publicist Heather Bes all went together to get “all is vanity” tattooed on their forearms. The phrase comes from the bible verse Ecclesiastes 1:2.

Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus revealed a new tattoo on the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards in August 2014. It’s done in a watered-down gray ink which makes it hard to see relative to her other inkings. The new writing on her right bicep says “I’m in your corner” on one line with country music legend Johnny Cash‘s signature on another line below it.

The quote doesn’t come from any public statement of Cash’s, but rather from a private letter that he wrote to Billy Ray Cyrus in 1992, following the success of Cyrus’ breakout song “Achy Breaky Heart.” Though the song received a lot of criticism for being a throw-away hit, Cash extended his support and welcomed Billy Ray into the country music community. In the hand-written letter, Cash wrote:

“Thirty-six years ago, I was working with Elvis and saw him take the same kind of flak you’re taking now. Congratulations on the way you’re handling it all. In your case, as in Elvis’, the good outweighs the bad. Let ’em have it. I’m in your corner.

Billy Ray Cyrus has the letter framed and on display in his home, where Miley surely saw it and took the message to heart. Though Miley has yet to speak about the tattoo, Billy Ray talks about the what the letter meant to him in a video clip:

“Johnny Cash wrote me the letter I carry around in the [“Thin Line” music] video. He wrote it to me in June of 1992. In some ways he wrote it at a time that I was going through the storm of my life. To receive that letter from Johnny Cash, and he ends it with ‘Let ’em have it, I’m in your corner.’ Knowing that Johnny Cash was in my corner, quite frankly, that was my rock. It not only was the cornerstone of that time period in my life but in some ways it became the cornerstone of the rock I stand on now.”

Marzia Bisognin

Marzia got this tattoo on her left forearm in September 2015. The writing, which says “La casa sulla luna” in her native language Italian, means “The house on the moon” in English. It’s a phrase from the book We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson, which has helped Marzia to deal with her social anxiety. The house on the the moon is a metaphor for a feeling of safety. On her blog she explained:

But this topic brings me to the next tattoo: “La casa sulla luna”, which translated is “The house on the moon”.

This refers to my social anxiety: once again, you know I struggle with it, and it used to be really really bad. This sentence comes from one of my favourite books, “We Have Always Lived in the Castle”, where the protagonist, after going through a tragedy, can never leave the house without feeling observed and judged by people.

If you have social anxiety you know that feeling very well: as soon as you leave your safe place, it feels like everybody is staring at you, and you just want to hide from the world.

In the story, the girl would imagine her safe place in her head (the house on the moon) while being outside, just so that thought could be somewhat comforting to her. And so I tried it myself, I would think about it as well while leaving the house, or when I was in uncomfortable situations, and it helped me greatly.

That’s why it’s on my body, it’s a constant reminder that I can do it, it’s all in my head, and if I think about positive things instead of letting my dark thoughts come to mind, everything will be fine.

Adele

Adele got three tattoos done in one sitting by tattoo artist Bang Bang in June 2013.  She got her son’s name “Angelo” on her right hand, “Paradise” on her left hand, and a number 5 on her finger. The finger tattoo has not been found by the public (and we’ve searched hard for it!), but Bang Bang revealed it’s existence in an interview with Yahoo: “She got the number five on the inside of one of her fingers, and I’m not sure if pop culture has picked up on that one yet. She got three that day.” Adele already knew what tattoos she wanted when she showed up in Bang Bang’s studio and she worked together with the artist on deciding the font, thickness, and other subtleties. She also took hold of the gun herself and tattooed a number “21” on Bang Bang’s leg.

Adele took time off between her albums 21 and 25 in order to take care of Angelo, who is her first child. But now that she back in the business she says that her son keeps her grounded. She explained to Today that she wasn’t worried about going on tour because she and her son will remain extremely close:

“My son comes everywhere with me. We’re all good. He’s the first person that I see in the morning and the last person that I see at night and vice-versa. So we’re all good. I make time for him like I always have. That’s one of the main reasons that I’ve been away for so long is because I was like ‘no, my kid is more important.’ My kid comes first and my music comes second. And I come second.”

Adele

This “Paradise” tattoo on Adele’s left hand goes with the “Angelo” tattoo on her right hand, symbolizing that her son Angelo is her paradise.  She had both tattoos done in the same session in June 2016, but at the time artist Bang Bang only released a photo of the “Paradise” tattoo since Adele was still keeping her son’s name private. The matching “Angelo” tattoo remained unseen for quite a while as Adele was taking a break from music at the time.

Lana Del Rey has a “Paradise” tattoo in the same spot on her hand which she has had for years, but Adele didn’t intend to copy. She says that she didn’t know about Lana Del Rey’s tattoo when she got hers and only learned after the fact. “She probably thinks I’m, like, some mad fangirl,” Adele joked in an interview with Rolling Stone“I mean, I am a Lana fangirl, but not a crazy one.” (more…)
