Black-and-Gray Tattoos

Megan Fox

Megan Fox once had a large portrait of Marilyn Monroe on her right forearm, but then had a change of heart and removed it. Marilyn struggled with depression throughout her life and died at only 36 years old. As Megan grew older, she no longer wanted to have a tattoo with such negative implications.

“I got it when I was 18,” she told Access Hollywood. “I just feel like her life was surrounded and shrouded in so much mystery and tragedy.  She was troubled, and there’s negativity with her life and with her death.  And I just feel like there are better things to have inked on your body than someone who struggled so much. So in getting older, I just decided that it was something that I wanted to get rid of.”

She began the process of laser tattoo removal in 2011.  The removal is far more painful than getting the tattoo. “It hurts really bad. It’s really painful. Getting them is not that bad, obviously, because I have so many,” she told Jay Leno. “It’s traumatic and it’s incredibly painful. They can’t numb it enough to make the pain go away.”

Lena Dunham

The tattoo on Lena Dunham’s upper left arm is an illustration from the children’s book The Story of Ferdinand. The book tells the tale of a bull who doesn’t want to fight and prefers to smell flowers. Lena’s tattoo depicts Ferdinand sitting under a tree in a field of flowers.

“I have tattoos from children’s books all over my arms and torso,” she told The New York Times. “The biggest one is of Ferdinand the bull, which Elliott Smith also had, but his was a different page. What a good message that book has! Just be yourself and don’t gore anyone with your horns if you don’t feel like it.”

She has had this tattoo since she was a teen and got it touched up in October 2016, writing “Ferdinand restored to his original pacifist glory… This was definitely the coolest thing I did at age 19.”

Tay Jardine Lion King Tattoo

Tay Jardine got her first tattoo in December 2012.  She and her friend Sam Panagakos got matching tattoos on their wrist of Simba from The Lion King.  The tattoos were done at Planet New York Tattoo in Poughkeepsie, NY.

She explained the meaning on her twitter: “it’s a reminder for me to stay grounded ‘remember who you are'”

Tay is a big fan of Disney movies and The Lion King is one of her favorites. The particular image that they chose is not the character Simba himself, but Rafiki’s drawing of Simba from the film.
