Side Tattoos

Bruna Marquezine

Bruna Marquezine’s second tattoo was a simple black cross on her left side, which is a tribute to her Christian faith. “The cross is because I have faith in God. I love it, and I like to look at it and to remember Him and how wonderful He is to me,” she tweeted.  It’s also a reminder of her mother, who taught her to believe in God.  My mother always spoke highly of love and God to me,” she says.  She had the tattoo re-done by artist Adao Rosa at Nautica Tattoo in July 2013 while getting a new tattoo of an anchor on her ankle. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato’s rib cage tattoo saw it’s third incarnation in September 2016, courtesy of artist Bang Bang.  With each update the tattoo has grown larger and now the huge piece covers her whole side.

The tattoo began with the lyrics “you make me beautiful” from the Bethany Dillon song “Beautiful.” This was Demi’s very first tattoo which she got when she was only sixteen.  The tattoo has religious meaning to Demi, reminding her that she can find confidence in knowing that God has made her perfect.  A few years later, in 2011, she added a pair of feathers behind the writing.

For the latest update, Bang Bang drew a dream catcher around the lyrics, using the previous pair of feathers as part of the dreamcatcher while also adding three more smaller feathers floating at the bottom and some strands of beads.  None of the beads or feathers are attached to each other, giving the design a light and ephemeral feeling.

Demi Lovato

These five Roman Numerals on Demi Lovato’s left side represent the birthdates of her family members. She got the tattoo at Bang Bang’s New York City studio late at night following a concert.  Though she first revealed the ink in a twitter picture in November 2014, it wasn’t brand new at the time. In a throwback instagram post she mentioned getting the tattoo done in the summer of 2014, but it seems most likely that it was on October 27, 2014 following her Demi World Tour performance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

VIII VIII MCMLXII – 8/8/1962 – August 8, 1962 is the birthday of her mother Dianna De La Garza (nee Dianna Lee Smith).

II IV MCMLXXXVIII – 2/4/1988 – February 4, 1988 is for her older sister Dallas Lovato.  She is an actress and voice actress who has had minor roles in a number of movies.

XII XXVIII MMI – 12/27/2001 – December 28, 2001 is the birth date of her younger half-sister Madison De La Garza who is the child of Demi’s mother and her step-father. Madison portrayed Gabrielle Solis’ (Eva Longoria) daughter Juanita Solis on the TV show Desperate Housewives.

II XIV MCMLXIII – 2/14/1963 – February 14, 1963 is for her step-father Eddie De La Garza. He has been a big part of Demi’s life since marrying her mother when Demi was young.

X XXIII MCMLX – 10/23/1960 – October 23, 1960 is for her biological father Patrick Lovato, who died in 2013.  Demi has had a complicated relationship with him due in large part to mental health issues, but he still hold a special place in her heart. “I was very conflicted when he passed, because he was abusive,” Demi says. “He was mean, but he wanted to be a good person. And he wanted to have his family.”

Not included in the tattoo is Demi’s older half-sister Amber, who is the child of Demi’s estranged father. Amber has not been a part of her life — Demi didn’t even know she existed until 2012.

On her left ribcage are the words “in this fearsome pilgrimage unearth a crusader’s heart.” She came up with this phrase herself and intended to use it as lyric in one of her songs, but it never made the cut. “[It] was something that was just drifting through my head for a few days. I was going to use it as a lyric but couldn’t make it work anywhere, but it really spoke to me in the time I was in. One day we had to cancel a show in Denver because the roads were closed due to blizzards and we ended up in a small town called Fort Collins. We were all in terrible moods so I escaped to a tattoo shop we passed on the way in and got it done.”
