Memorial Tattoos

Gigi Gorgeous

Gigi Gorgeous has a beautiful script tattoo of her mother’s birthday on her left ribs.
She decided to incorporate a ladybug in the tattoo design because over the last two years she kept seeing ladybugs in the most random places which made her remembering her mother and the time they bought a house in New York and there was an infestation with ladybugs all over the place.

Monica Brown

Monica used to have the word “knot” above the portrait of Jesus on her upper left arm. “Knot” is the nickname of her boyfriend Jarvis Weems and she got this tattoo as a memorial to him after he died by suicide in 2000. A few years later, she covered up his name with a flower over each letter.

His passing caused a major upheaval in her life. She felt unable to work and took a hiatus from her music career in order to heal. She cared for his daughter during that time and considered the young girl “the best therapy.”

The death was all the more traumatic because she witnessed it firsthand. She and Knot were visiting the grave site of his brother, who had died in a car accident two years earlier, when he pulled out a gun and shot himself in the head. “Someone passing is very different than seeing someone take their life, or if you’re there when someone else has taken their life. I think those situations make me the person I am today,” she told MTV. “People would never expect some of the things I’ve experienced and some of the things I’m not shy to talk about.”

Asia Argento

Asia Argento tattooed her right hand knuckles with the names of four of her artistic idols:

  • “Joe” is for painter Joe Coleman, who is a friend and collaborator of hers. He has painted portraits of Asia and also acted in her 2000 directorial debut Scarlet Diva.
  • “Syd” is for Syd Barrett, a musician and painter who was one of the founding members of Pink Floyd.
  • “Moz” is for singer/songwriter Morrissey
  • “Bob” is for singer/songwriter Bob Dylan

She got the “Bob” tattoo first in February 2014 and then added the remaining three in April 2014.  All of the names were tattooed by artist Michele Agostini.

The “Syd” tattoo serves double duty as it also represents her friend Sydney Zekley. Syd has a tattoo of Asia’s name along the side of her finger.

Ariel Winter

Ariel Winter has a tattoo on the inside of right wrist of the spade symbol from a deck of cards. The inking is a tribute to her maternal grandmother Helen G. Batistas, who taught her how to play poker.

“I have a spade on my wrist because I love playing cards, like more than anything, it’s my favorite thing to do.” Ariel told ET. “I’ve been playing poker since I was six years old. My grandmother actually taught me when I was young, so I have a spade for her.”

Ariel has had a complicated relationship with her mother Chrisoula, whom she has accused of both verbal and physical abuse, so her relationship with her grandmother was extra special. E! News reports that Ariel’s older sister Shanelle, who would eventually become Ariel’s legal guardian, was removed from her mother’s home temporarily at the age of 12 and placed in the care of their grandmother.

Helen passed away from a massive stroke at the age of 72 in August 2010. However Ariel still holds a special place in her heart for her. “Yiayia we’ve missed you everyday since you left us in 2010. We love you so much.” she tweeted in 2015.

The timeline for this tattoo is a bit confusing. Ariel posted videos on her Snapchat while getting the tattoo done by artist Dr Woo on November 17, 2016, but she had previously talked about the tattoo in an October 2016 interview with ET. Our best guess is that she got the tattoo done at an earlier date and then had it retouched by Dr Woo in November.

Whenever it was first done, we know that she had thought about getting a memorial tattoo for years beforehand. Back in October 2012, Ariel posted a picture on her instagram of a temporary tattoo that she drew with a marker of her grandmother’s nickname “yiayia” and her date of death.

Noah Cyrus

Noah Cyrus’s first known tattoo is a roman numeral on her collarbone. It says “II – XXVIII – MMVI” which represents the numbers “2 – 28 – 2006.” The tattoo is a tribute to her paternal grandfather Ronald Ray Cyrus, who died on February 28, 2006. His death from lung cancer at the age of 70 also inspired Noah’s sister Miley Cyrus to get her first tattoo, which was of the words “Just Breathe.”

She chose this placement in order to reclaim a body part that she was self-conscious about.  She told AMBY:

I broke my shoulder a few years ago and I had to do a surgery on it.  So I have a scar on my shoulder and I wanted to cover up the scar. Because I would never show my shoulders anymore.  I was like ‘this has gotta go.’  So I got that tattoo for my Pappy and put it on my shoulder.

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose has a huge portrait of graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat on her upper left arm, which she got from artist Jessica Mascitti Ellis at the New York City tattoo parlor East Side Ink in June 2014. She is a huge fan of Basquiat and previously tattooed his iconic crown logo on her chest.

Some fans noted a resemblance between the portrait’s whacky hairstyle and singer The Weeknd, so Ruby took to twitter to clear the air and encourage her followers to look up Basquiat’s art and the graffiti tag SAMO which he shared with fellow graffiti artist Al Diaz. “Although I love the @theweeknd no he is not tattooed on my arm. it’s Basquiat. SAMO! You’re missing out if you don’t about SAMO,” she tweeted.

Basquiat was one of the most prominent street artists of the 1970s and 1980s, but he died tragically of a heroin overdose in 1988 at the age of 27. In tweet, Ruby wrote “So many people dont know Basquiat? You should watch one of the documentaries or read up beautiful soul, lost too young. My favorite Artist.”

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose has two boxing-related tattoos on the right side of her upper back.  The first part of the tattoo is a tribute to her godfather Lionel Rose, an accomplished professional boxer who was the first indigenous Australian to win a world boxing title. Lionel passed away in May 2011 at the age of 62.  That same month, Ruby visited Sydney Australia tattoo artist Rhys Gordon to get a tribute piece. She got a tattoo on her right shoulder blade of a pair of boxing gloves and a laurel wreath with Lionel’s name at the bottom.

Ruby, whose birth name is Ruby Rose Lagenheim, was named after Lionel Rose but is not biologically related to him. He and her father were close friends. Back in 2012 Lionel’s family stirred up controversy by saying that they hadn’t had any relationship with Ruby since her parents’ divorce and alleging that she was using the name “Rose” to further her own career by association to Lionel. Though it’s true that Ruby didn’t have any contact with Lionel later in her life, she says that seeing him as a young girl had a major impact on her.

“I met Lionel five or six times as a young tacker and he was a huge inspiration to me,” she told the Herald Sun. “I didn’t have a dad. Those trips to Lionel’s, while very few and far between, were everything. We had a crummy life, we didn’t have any money, dad was like `how’s it going?, but Lionel had a real impact on me…He passed away as my godfather. They can’t take that away from me…I love him – and if he’s looking down on me from heaven, I know he would be proud of the things I do.”

One of the thing that Ruby did honor Lionel’s legacy was to train as an amateur boxer herself. In November 2012 she added onto the tattoo with two yellow lightning bolts and “The Thorn” which is her own boxing nickname. She entered a few amateur fights around the time that she got the tattoo, but it seems that since then she’s put her own boxing gloves to rest.
