Matching Tattoos

Erika Costell

Erika Costell and her boyfriend/husband Jake Paul got matching “GOAT” tattoos in January 2018. The YouTube power couple known as “Jerika” both got the word written in capital letters that are stacked vertically. She placed her tiny inking on her left forearm while he incorporated his much larger “GOAT” tattoo into a growing collection of intersecting words on his left thigh. They joked that Erika is a goat, as in the animal, while Jake is the GOAT, an acronym for Greatest Of All Time.

Goats are Erika’s favorite animal and have been since she was a child. She previously had the word “goat” tattooed inside her lip, though lip tattoos are known to wear off so it might be very faded by now. She explained that her goat obsession all dates back to one special pet:

Why am I obsessed with goats? When I was 12 years old or so I had a pet goat. I loved this goat so much. His name was Twinklebuddy. I also had a couple other weird animals with weird names, but Twinklebuddy was my favorite and he actually died unexpectedly. I’ve been obsessed with goats my entire life. I don’t know where it came from — well I know it came from Twinklebuddy but it’s stayed with me all the way til right now. So that’s the reasoning behind everything goat. It also means Greatest Of All Time.

Anne-Marie

Anne-Marie and fellow singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran got matching “Mug” tattoos while on tour together in July 2018. She is an opening act on his ÷ stadium tour, putting her in front of much larger audiences than she’s used to. It’s been helping her to get more comfortable performing and to expose her music to his huge global fanbase.

They’ve been friends for almost 10 years and going on tour together has given them a lot of downtime to hang out. She told Standard:

“I think it’s a little bit different because we’re friends anyway, we make more time for each other just because we’re friends. I think when it comes to the UK tour it was harder for us because we have friends and family coming and we want to make time to see them so we don’t get to see each other much. But when it comes to Europe and America we spend a lot more time together.”

“Mug” is a nickname that they call each other.  She got the tattoo on the back of her left arm in his handwriting, posting on her instagram “1 guess what mug wrote this.”

Ed Sheeran’s “Mug” tattoo is on the inside of his right elbow, just above his Irish flag shamrock.

They were inked by artist Tobias Tietchen at his Hamburg, Germany tattoo studio Atelier Tietchen before their concert in Hamburg on July 25, 2018.

Faith Evans

Faith Evans got a new tattoo in July 2018 following her wedding to fellow R&B singer and producer Steven Aaron Jordan aka Stevie J. The couple were wed in their Las Vegas hotel room on July 17, 2018 and they wasted no time getting the relationship sealed on their skin, showing off their matching tattoos on instagram only a week later.

Both Faith and Stevie got their wedding date in Roman numerals on the tops of their shoulders — VII•XVII•MMXVIII for July 17, 2018. Stevie also tattooed her initials in front of his ear — FRJ for her new married name Faith Renée Jordan.

Although the marriage was an impulsive decision, it’s been decades in the making. Their professional relationship dates back to the mid-90’s, when Faith was signed to Bad Boy Records and Stevie J was one of the label’s in-house producers. “We’ve loved each other for years, been great friends for years, and obviously developed a romantic connection,” she told Acton Entertainment.

They also collaborated on a new song called “A Minute” complete with a steamy music video that was coincidentally released shortly after the wedding. “We had already had the dates that we were going to put the song out before we decided to go and elope to Vegas and get married….So it’s actually good timing now, but it wasn’t really planned that way. The single was gonna come out regardless.”

Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale got a tattoo of an elephant on her right arm during a trip to Cambodia in May 2018. She and her Life Sentence co-star Elliot Knight visited the country with the charity organization Ripple Effect and got to visit children with special medical needs in addition to seeing all the beautiful ancient temples. Lucy had some crazy experiences during her trip including eating fried tarantulas that she purchased at a local street market, which she says taste like potato chips. She wrote on her instagram:

Peace out Cambodia. – Every once in a while certain experiences and people open your eyes. Grateful for the remarkable time I had & for the beautiful children we met. Being a very small part of something this extraordinary is something that will stay with me for life & I can’t wait to be back to see the kids next year. And to my new friends- I love you guys!

It doesn’t seem like Lucy got to meet any elephants during her brief trip, though Elliot continued on to Thailand after she left and had his own elephant adventure, but surely she saw lots of elephant carvings in the buildings she visited.  The Asian Elephant is now an endangered species but was prevalent through Cambodia in the past and is a common motif in the country’s art and architecture.

She got the little elephant on her elbow inked at Bayon Tattoo, which is named after the Bayon temple in Angkor Wat and is located only a few miles from the historic site.  This parlor does some of its tattoos with the traditional Cambodian bamboo technique, but Lucy opted to get hers with a modern tattoo gun. She showed pictures of the process and the result on her instagram and captioned it:

Tattoos everywhere I go ?

Other members of the tour group got their own matching elephant tattoos on various body parts.

Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale and her older sister Maggie got matching tattoos in memory of their late grandmother.  The sisters both inked “I love you” on their right forearm in their grandmother’s own handwriting.  Lucy showed off the matching tatts on her instagram and wrote:

Nothing says sisterly bonding more than permanently tattooing your body. After years of wanting our grandmothers writing, we did it! Our Grammy was our favorite person & now she’s even more a part of us. Also, my sister is a badass who raises two kids, teaches combat classes AND goes on tattoo runs with her baby sister. Also, ouch. This one hurt.

Lucy’s grandmother is still a major part of her life even after she passed away.  She attempted to connect with her grandma on an episode of E!’s Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry and said:

I definitely felt like I was with her today, but then again I always feel close to her…I definitely always feel her presence.

Me and my sister talk about it all the time that we wish she could be here to see what I’ve done.  I don’t think many people thought in my family that [my career] would be what it is, but I always think that she did.

This tattoo, which they got in July 2018, is actually the second tattoo that Lucy and her sister got together to honor their grandmother.  She already had a sun on her upper back.

Maggie Lindemann

Maggie Lindemann had been planning this fangs tattoo for a long time before getting it done in March 2018.  The vampire-loving singer got some more discrete tattoos like “Bite Me” on her finger and a bat on her ankle first before taking the plunge because she didn’t want to get a large piece while she’s still so young.  But by March 2018 she was finally ready to get the tattoo that she really wanted.  She and her friend Chris Miles got matching tattoos on their forearms of an open mouth showing its teeth and fangs.  Artist Sick Boy used a blackwork technique to create the goth-style design using solid black ink.  Maggie is definitely having a goth moment with her clothing, but she’s sure that the tattoo will be something that stays relevant as she continues to evolve:

“I’ve wanted a vampire tattoo since I was 11.  Wanted this specific tattoo since 2016.  Just because my style changes doesn’t mean who I truly am on the inside or the things I’ve always liked change.”

Kelsea Ballerini

Kelsea Ballerini has a tattoo of a square inside a circle on her left wrist as a tribute to her song “Square Pegs” and its message of non-conformity. She told Ty Kelly and Chuck:

“My third tattoo is because of my song called ‘Square Pegs.’ The hook is ‘square pegs make the world go round’ and it’s about embracing what makes you different and knowing that flaws are not a bad thing. It’s what makes you who you are and embracing that. I got that tattoo in L.A.”

The feeling of not fitting in isn’t unique to Kelsea. She wrote this song trying to capture a universal feeling that everyone deals with sometimes, telling Radio Disney:

“A square peg, it’s someone who doesn’t necessarily fit in the mold of whatever normal might be. And I think we all have those moments of feeling like we don’t fit, like we’re the square peg….I’ve spent a lot of my life wondering where and how I fit, and I’m starting to find that there’s a lot of beauty in not fitting. I really wanted a song to capture that….Being normal can be a little boring sometimes. I think that being different is exciting.”

Many fans of the song have their own versions of this tattoo — including fellow country singer Levi Hummon. They got their tattoos together following their sold-out concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, CA on November 23, 2015. He told Mega Country:

“After the show we got very, very excited. I ended up getting a matching tattoo with Kelsea Ballerini. It’s currently on my hand. It’s actually her song, square peg in round hole.
And it’s about being a creative person, not being able to fit in necessarily, so I thought it related to me.”

Her makeup artist Meegan Pearson and some other members of her crew were also part of the matching tattoos.
