Grimes and her friend Hana Pestle aka HANA got semi-matching Lord of the Rings tattoos in July 2018. Artist Delphine Noiztoy came over to HANA’s house to tattoo both of them with writing in J.R.R. Tolkien’s elvish language. This was HANA’s very first tattoo and she got the Gandalf quote “and all turns to silver glass” on her thigh. Grimes got elven script on three of her fingers reading “Contradiction / Be ready for war / No shields allowed” which is not a direct quote from the book series.
Lea Michele has two lines of text on the right side of her rib cage reading “I love you more” and “if you say so” as a reminder of the last conversation that she ever had with her fiance Cory Monteith before he died of a drug overdose on July 13, 2013.
“I love you more” is the last thing that she ever said to him and she’s thankful to have ended things on such a positive note, telling Seventeen “I spoke to a woman who had lost her son, and she mentioned how grateful she was that the words she said to her son before he died were ‘I love you.’ Mine were as well.”
The last words that her said to her were “if you say so” in response to her. She wrote a song called “If You Say So” about his passing which contains the lyrics “And I can’t get the last words that you said / Can’t get those words out of my head” and “You said, I love you girl / I said, I love you more / Then a breath, a pause, you said / If you say so.”
Lena Dunham has a tattoo on her right rib cage reading “RIP Judy” in script font. On her Instagram she explained the meaning of her tattoo which is a reminder of her hysterectomy. Lena, after her decade-long struggle with endometriosis and other pain issues, decided to do the hysterectomy surgery.
“Today is National Leathercraft Day, National Relaxation Day and National Lemon Merengue Pie Day. It’s also the 9 month anniversary of my hysterectomy. I’ve never celebrated the 9 month anniversary of anything and I realized last night why that number feels so funny- I won’t ever do it the way I planned to. My body is mostly healed and every day I find a new bruise on my heart, but today I offer myself gratitude: from the most pained place, I somehow knew to choose myself. The purest glint of who we are and know we can be is always available to us, calm and true at our center. My friend Paul named my uterus Judy, and when she was being uppity we called her out, hence the tattoo on my ribs, which hurt like fuck even through the pain meds: #RIPJudy. Today I give thanks for Judy, for her graceful exit and for this body, which is stronger than I’ve ever given it credit for. Happy Giving Birth To Myself Day.”
Grimes gave herself a stick-and-poke of three Cyrillic letters on her knee in September 2017. It’s placed upside down so that it faces towards her, which makes sense seeing as it was a DIY tattoo.
It seems that she meant to write “fae,” but it’s more of a transliteration than a translation. Her tattoo “ФАЙ” is pronounced like “fae,” but the actual word for fae/fairy in Russian is “ФЕЯ.” Coincidentally, her version looks more like the Russian word “РАЙ” meaning “paradise.”
Fae is an old English word for fairy, but Grimes has been using it to describe music that gives off fairy vibes. She curates a playlist called “the faé list” and has applied her own artistic backstory to the sound, writing “The fae are the children living at the end of the world, who make art that reflects what it’s like to live knowing the earth may not sustain humanity much longer. We live knowing that environmentally driven genocide is nigh, that the least equipped are to be struck down by the very earth itself. Repentance by the innocent for the sins of the rich. This does not mean that all fae art is directly about this, but that the influence of this reality is inescapable for the fae.”
Jillian Rose Reed has a cursive tattoo on her left forearm reading “Love you soooo much” – and is a special message for her my grandma.
“I am the woman I am today, and I’m in the place I am today because of my grandmother. She taught me to be resilient, handle things with grace, and always wear enough blush ?I still can’t wrap my mind around the fact that she’s no longer with me physically, but I know she’s always in my heart. She was an incredible woman, and I plan to follow in her footsteps. Grandma, I “love you soooo much”, thank you for leaving me with your writing so I can carry you with me forever.” – Jillian wrote in an Instagram post.
Angel Haze has has a message on her left forearm reading “Pressure Makes Diamonds”.
Sherri DuPree Bemis got a chest tattoo in July 2018 featuring a rose and the words “up all night.” As a mother of three, her kids often keep her up at night. She was inspired by an illustration of a tattooed mom wearing a nursing bra, but rather than getting that design on her she got a tattoo similar to one that the cartoon mother has. She wrote on her instagram:
New Ink by the masterful @jwhitttattooer! (It’s now my favorite tattoo). When I saw @drawingsbynicole’s ‘Up All Night’ art (swipe for it), I totally connected with it and wanted to get a piece inspired by it; As always, @jwhitttattooer was able to interpret it perfectly and create this beautiful design. ?
I feel so blessed to know such talented, and humble people filled with genuine passion and creativity. They make the world a better place.
Sia has a green ink tattoo on her right index finger which says “RADGICAL™”. She included the trademark symbol because she made up the word, which is a combination of rad and magical.
