Alessia Cara has a tattoo of a sailboat on her left wrist to represent “smooth sailing.” For her it is a symbol of hidden strength. She told Billboard:
“It’s a paper sailboat. They seem so frail, but when you put them on water they float. It’s a reminder that even though I’m small and seem weak, I’m not.”
Fittingly, the sailboat-tattooed-singer was chosen to record the theme song for Disney’s Moana, a movie about a girl who sets sail on a makeshift boat.
Niykee Heaton’s shoulder tattoo says “My ambition is my weaponry” which is a line from her song “I’m Ready.” “My lyrics have become a part of me,” she says. In an instagram post she explained:
I wrote “I’m Ready” when I had just turned 18, left home, and moved to New York with LP to pursue my music. It was the first song I ever recorded in a real studio. Just me and my guitar. A shitty quality demo, that I didn’t think twice about releasing. But I knew this song was important. It set the tone for my journey, and through the obstacles I’ve faced, this song became my anthem. I released “I’m Ready” on my Soundcloud a week ago, and already; 7 people have tattooed my lyrics on their bodies. You can call me whatever you want, think of me as you please; but I create music for this reason alone. To affect people with my words, to change their day, change their lives. I just wanted to thank you guys for helping me accomplish my dream and my goal. To simply create music that serves a purpose. And even if it only affected these 7 people… that’s enough for me. Debra Wilson has symmetric tribal designs tattooed on both of her hips. On her lower back are Japanese/Chinese kanji symbols including the symbol for “strength.”

Demi Lovato got a tattoo on her back from artist Bang Bang on May 14, 2013 — the release day for her fourth album Demi. The tattoo says “now I’m a warrior”, which are lyrics from the album’s closing track “Warrior.” In the song, Demi sings about how the struggles in her personal life have made her a stronger person.
“I have a song on my album called ‘Warrior’ and it’s a very, very meaningful song to me,” she told Jimmy Fallon. “It’s really heavy, the lyrics, but it’s an inspirational song as well. It’s a negative thing turned positive. I’ve been through a lot and I’m really really honest on this album. And this is a song that was really difficult for me to write, record, and now release. [The tattoo] was kind of like a tribute to releasing the album as well as overcoming some really really difficult things in my life.” (more…)
Demi Lovato’s most well know tattoos are the words “Stay Strong” on her wrists. Demi added these tattoos in March 2011 shortly after she spent nearly three months in rehab treating her issues with cutting and bulimia, with which she had struggled for many years.
The tattoos remind her to think positively. She told 20/20 “The message is for me. It says ‘Stay Strong.’ So every day no matter if I’m putting on my shoes or putting on my makeup, I see it every day, to stay strong.”
They were placed on her wrists, an area that she used to cut, in order to cover her scars as well as to serve as a symbol of her tremendous growth and recovery. Demi says “It was very symbolic for me to be able to be able to cover that up and also replace it with something else that’s permanent so that I’ll never be able to forget the support that I had when I went in [to treatment].” (more…)
Mary J. Blige’s hand tattoo is the kanji for “Strength” (力) which is used in both Chinese and Japanese.
Keke Palmer has a quote from the Greek philosopher Aristotle on the inside of her left upper arm. It says “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”
She told EBONY “When I was younger, I would always go to this website called thinkexist.com whenever I was feeling stressed or happy or felt like expressing myself. I would go get a quote that was surrounded by those specific ideas or subject. So one day I put in something like ‘strength’ and I came across the quote ‘We are what we repeatedly do, excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.’ And I loved it so much that I ended up getting it tattooed.”
Jenna Ushkowitz has the word “strongwill” tattooed in a typewriter font on the right side of her upper back.
Maria Brink has “We Shall” tattooed on the inside of her right wrist and “Overcome” on her left. There’s a little skull and crossbones in red ink and black stars which are part of her full-sleeve design.
