Career Tattoos

Maren Morris

Maren Morris got this roman numeral tattoo the back of her left arm to celebrate the success of her single “I Could Use A Love Song.” It was her first solo number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart, having previously topped the chart with her feature on Thomas Rhett’s “Craving You.”

More importantly, “I Could Use a Love Song” was nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the 2018 Grammy Awards. She decided that she would honor the achievement and the song during her trip to attend the Grammy Awards ceremony. “Oh, and a ICUALS tattoo is definitely happening when I’m in NYC for Grammys. #SorryDad,” she tweeted.

She showed off her fresh ink on the red carpet at the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala on January 27, 2018, telling Billboard:

It’s been an amazing month. I can’t believe — It went number one, and then we’re at the Grammys this weekend….Watching it inch up the chart all week, and then they finally said it went number one and I could just exhale, finally. It was really exciting. I actually got a tattoo today to signify the number of weeks it was on the chart. So it’s 42. It’s the first number one so I want to celebrate it.

“I Could Use A Love Song” was released on March 27, 2017 as the third single for debut album Hero. The sleeper hit climbed the chart slowly after debuting at number 56. It finally hit number one on the chart dated January 20, 2018 after 42 long weeks. Maren’s tattoo says “XLII” which is the roman numeral for 42.

Maren Morris has a tattoo of a watercolor-style hummingbird on the inside of her left forearm.  She loves hummingbirds, but it is symbolic of her music career as well.  She explained to Country Note:

This is my first tattoo.  It’s a hummingbird.  My first ever guitar was a Gibson Hummingbird.  And I just love them.  That was when I was 18.

Based on an interview with Huffington Post, it seems like the Gibson Hummingbird was actually her third guitar.  She got a cheap Ibanez acoustic guitar from her dad when she was 12, which she loaned to a neighbor and never saw again; and Martin acoustic guitar which she still has.  The Gibson Hummingbird was an 18th birthday present from her parents.

Regardless, the Gibson Hummingbird is the one that’s special to her.  We love that she found a creative an beautiful way to represent it with this hummingbird design rather than getting a picture of the guitar itself.

Chiara Ferragni

Chiara Ferragni has a tattoo of an eye on her left ring finger.  Eyes have become synonymous with her fashion brand Chiara Ferragni Collection, which started out making shoes and has now included eyes in the designs for everything from bikinis to phone case.  She told Female:

I created @chiaraferragnicollection in 2013 and it’s growing like crazy. I designed this blue eye for the first collection because eyes are the feature that I love the most in a person and it became iconic, it’s the logo of the brand now.

Eyes are a common tattoo motif since “evil eye” talismans are thought to ward off evil in many cultures.  Chiara has confirmed that the tattoo does have some superstitious meanings to her, but wouldn’t elaborate on it, telling Glamour:

I really liked the aesthetic. The most iconic piece of my shoe line, Chiara Ferragni Collection, is the blinking eyes. There is a secret meaning about it I won’t tell. I am Italian, so I am pretty superstitious :)

She loves the look of eyes and has been known to wear eye jewelry from many different brands, not just her own.

Iggy Azalea

Much like her “The New Classic” tattoos on her right hand fingers which spell out the name of her debut album, Iggy Azalea tattooed “Digital Distortion” on her left hand fingers in anticipation of her sophomore album, which was never released.  She got the tattoo from artist Rafael Valdez in March 2016.  Her then-fiance Nick Young tagged along and got an unrelated tattoo on his arm.

Iggy’s tattoo covers up two of her old “Live Love A$AP” finger tattoos which she had removed.  “Digital” is on her ring finger and “Distortion” is on her middle finger.  “I covered up my old finger tattoos since they were light enough from the laser removal. Still working on the pinky though,” she tweeted.

The album title “Digital Distortion” represents how facts become warped in the age of social media and clickbait journalism.  Iggy has often ranted about news stories she sees about herself which are either untrue or aren’t newsworthy.  Even though the album was never released, the term “Digital Distortion” still means a lot to her.  In response to a fan who asked if she planned to remove the tattoo, she tweeted:

Digital distortion is an ongoing fact of life in the internet. Unless the internet starts being honest it’s relevant as fuck to me.

Digital Distortion‘s release was pushed back multiple times for different reasons.  After her breakup with Nick Young, she scrapped a whole album because she felt that the songs she’d previously written no longer reflected what she wanted to say.  Her label was underwhelmed by the chart performance of the singles that were released.  Eventually the whole project was shelved.  Iggy switched to a new record label and a new management team and announced that her next album would be called Survive the Summer instead.

Erika Costell

Erika Costell has a red “X” tattoo on her right elbow for Team 10, the YouTube house which she is a part of. X is the roman numeral for 10.

She hates how this tattoo looks and actually wanted to get it removed. In a vlog she explained why she was planning to get rid of it:

“Right now it’s a bittersweet moment. I love Team 10, but it’s time to get my Team 10 tattoo removed…because the guy who did my tattoo completely screwed it up. It’s uneven. The color is ugly. It was just a total fail…That’s my seventh tattoo and I’ve had no problems with any other tattoos and I just can’t get used to this one. I hate it; it’s poorly done.”

However when she arrived for her appointment at LaserAway they told her that their machines were designed for black ink and they couldn’t remove her tattoo because of the color. She was warned that the lasers could actually make the tattoo worse or cause scarring, so she left with the tattoo still on her arm.

Hayley Williams

Hayley Williams got the letters “AL” tattooed on the back of her left wrist in honor of her band Paramore’s fifth studio album After Laughter. She got the tattoo a few days after the album’s May 12, 2017 release date. Fans got their first look at the new tattoo during Paramore’s debut television performance of the album’s lead single “Hard Times” at Jimmy Kimmel Live on May 17, 2017.

All three members of Paramore have the “AL” tattoo.  Guitarist Taylor York placed his above a cluster of tattoos which he has on the inside of his upper right arm.  Drummer Zac Farro, who is the least tatted member of the band, put his in a discreet location on his upper thigh.

Skylar Grey

Skylar Gray has a large tattoo on her right thigh based on art nouveau illustrator Aubrey Beardsley’s 1893 drawing “The Peacock Skirt.”  The original illustration (pictured below) is cut off with a hard line at the bottom, so tattoo artist Joshua Lord added his own creative flair to the design by changing the outline into a beautiful mermaid tail shape.

The tattoo celebrates Skylar’s involvement in the Suicide Squad movie soundtrack.  She contributed two songs: “Wreak Havoc” which she performed herself and Kehlani’s “Gangsta” which she co-wrote.  Fellow songwriter Jacob Luttrell drew something on her thigh on the night when they began writing “Gangsta” together.   The doodle was either a butterfly or a fish — neither of them can quite remember — but this piece of art evokes the feeling of both.
