Accomplishment Tattoos

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose got this “MTV” knuckle tattoo to commemorate the time that she spent as an MTV VJ in her native Australia. She began working for the network after winning a nationwide search for a new host in 2007. The blue ink letters are placed on her middle knuckles, below the larger “Just Love” knuckle tattoo.

She has expressed her gratitude towards MTV in a few tweets. “Forever indebted to those who believe in me and I will never take that for granted. From my family to MTV to everyone I’ve met till now,” she wrote. “Feeling blessed, never thought I would see the day I’d be working for MTV, In NY for FW AND an agency like NEXT believes so much in me.”

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose has a tattoo along her right collarbone which says “Maybe she’s born with it” to commemorate her modeling work with cosmetics brand Maybelline New York, whose advertising slogan is “Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s Maybelline.”

Ruby has been the face of Maybelline cosmetics in her native Australia since 2010. She has commended the brand for selecting a tattooed and androgynous person like herself to be the face of a traditionally feminine brand. “4 years ago @maybelline @mnyau took a big risk and chose a tattooed rock chick to be the face of their iconic brand,” she wrote on her instagram when she got the tattoo done in March 2014.

But the biggest reason she was so compelled to get the tattoo is that the brand supported her even when she was going through personal turmoil. “I really just wanted to remind myself that a brand like Maybelline – an internationally known brand, stands by me when I don’t believe in myself,” she revealed in an interview with The Carousel. “With my depression, when I went into rehab and took time off work and they were like ‘No, we want you to be healthy, you’re a human being,’ and that’s actually a big thing for a brand to do, surprisingly.”

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose has two boxing-related tattoos on the right side of her upper back.  The first part of the tattoo is a tribute to her godfather Lionel Rose, an accomplished professional boxer who was the first indigenous Australian to win a world boxing title. Lionel passed away in May 2011 at the age of 62.  That same month, Ruby visited Sydney Australia tattoo artist Rhys Gordon to get a tribute piece. She got a tattoo on her right shoulder blade of a pair of boxing gloves and a laurel wreath with Lionel’s name at the bottom.

Ruby, whose birth name is Ruby Rose Lagenheim, was named after Lionel Rose but is not biologically related to him. He and her father were close friends. Back in 2012 Lionel’s family stirred up controversy by saying that they hadn’t had any relationship with Ruby since her parents’ divorce and alleging that she was using the name “Rose” to further her own career by association to Lionel. Though it’s true that Ruby didn’t have any contact with Lionel later in her life, she says that seeing him as a young girl had a major impact on her.

“I met Lionel five or six times as a young tacker and he was a huge inspiration to me,” she told the Herald Sun. “I didn’t have a dad. Those trips to Lionel’s, while very few and far between, were everything. We had a crummy life, we didn’t have any money, dad was like `how’s it going?, but Lionel had a real impact on me…He passed away as my godfather. They can’t take that away from me…I love him – and if he’s looking down on me from heaven, I know he would be proud of the things I do.”

One of the thing that Ruby did honor Lionel’s legacy was to train as an amateur boxer herself. In November 2012 she added onto the tattoo with two yellow lightning bolts and “The Thorn” which is her own boxing nickname. She entered a few amateur fights around the time that she got the tattoo, but it seems that since then she’s put her own boxing gloves to rest.

Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato got this tattoo of Africa on the inside of her right elbow to commemorate a trip that she went on to Kenya.

She takes her sobriety seriously, but also wanted to do something big for her twenty-first birthday.  Rather than throwing a party she went on a volunteer trip to the Maasai Mara Region of Kenya with the charity WE (formerly known as Free The Children) and helped to build a school. “Birthdays are all about celebrating life and people are very blessed to even make it to 21. So the last thing I think anyone should be doing on their birthday is poisoning themselves,” she said“I am just going to do a bunch of charity stuff and I feel like the best way to celebrate anyone’s birthday is just giving back and helping others.”

Not only did Demi’s trip help the local community, but she got a lot out of the experience herself. She tweeted “This trip has been such an amazing experience. Yesterday was the best birthday of my entire life!!!” The August 2013 trip was so impactful that she decided to create a permanent reminder with this tattoo, revealed in December 2013. She chose the shape of the the continent of Africa rather than the country of Kenya so that it would be more recognizable.

“I went [to Africa] for my 21st birthday. I went to Kenya and it was just a very, very inspirational journey that I feel like really had a huge impact on my life,” she told iHeartRadio. “And, I would’ve gotten Kenya but then people would have been like, ‘What’s that?’ So Africa’s a little more distinct.”

Ashlee Simpson

In August 2005, Ashlee Simpson added two new tattoos at the same time to celebrate the completion of her second album I Am Me. One of these tattoos was the word “Love” on her wrist. Ashlee explained the meaning of this tattoo to People Magazine: “I got ‘love’ because for me love is the most important thing. So I can give people love.”

Was this tattoo inspired by her love for a boyfriend? Ashlee says not. “No, it’s not for anyone,” she told About.com. She also joked about why she chose to place it on her wrist: “It’s like Spider-Man, like you shoot love to people [said while shooting her wrist forward like Tobey Maguire does in the “Spider-Man” movies].”
