Florence Welch has a birdcage tattoo on the knuckle of her right middle finger.  She collected birdcages as a child. “I got it done in Austin, Texas, at the Black Cat Tattoo parlour, where I got my first tattoo of a heart and a bird,” she told GQ. “I got it done at 2am by some massive guy with flame tattoos on his skull called Animal. It was a proper tattoo experience but it hurt so much.”

Fans who want to recreate the look without the commitment can buy a birdcage ring inspired by this tattoo from Florence’s jewelry line Flotique.

Skylar Grey has a tattoo on the left side of her neck of two crossed hatchets. The image is in the negative space, with gray ink spread around it like a spray-paint stencil.

The hatchets represent the time that Skylar spent living in the woods and learning to survive on her own. She has used the same crossed axe design as her logo.

Bunny Meyer got this portrait tattoo on the top of her right foot during spring break in 2011. “This was my first color tattoo and also my first large area tattoo,” she explained in a video. “It’s a cameo of Al Swearengen who is a character from the TV show Deadwood.” His face is in a golden picture frame with two crossed miner’s knives at the bottom.

The tattoo was done by Dave Boseman at Locally Famous Tattoo in Houston, TX. He got through it in one session which took roughly seven hours. “He is by far the best portrait artist I have even seen,” Bunny says.

She original planned on getting tattoos on both feet, but has reconsidered since this one was so painful. She was shocked by how much it hurt since her first tattoo on her wrist was relatively pain-free. “I was going to get another cameo on my left foot of another Deadwood character so they would match and be a set. But I have not been able to convince myself to do this because the first time around was so horrible.” Even after the tattoo was done, her foot was so swollen that she couldn’t walk for a week.

In March 2014, Sherri DuPree-Bemis got a tattoo on her right forearm of a girl with pink hair and a Día de Muertos sugar skull face. The design was drawn by Mab Graves and tattooed by Joshua Whitten in Sherri’s hometown of Tyler, TX.  There is an obvious resemblance between the tattooed character and Sherri herself — she has had her hair every color of the rainbow, but pink is one of her favorites.
