Movie Tattoos

Kehlani

The two figures on Kehlani’s inner thighs represent a scene from the movie Pulp Fiction where the characters enter a twist dance competition. On her right leg wearing a white shirt is Mia Wallace, played by Uma Thurman, and on her left leg wearing a suit is Vincent Vega, played by John Travolta. Kehlani can move her legs to make the two tattoos dance.

She got the tattoo in July 2016 and shared a picture on instagram which she captioned with a quote from the movie: “I want that trophy. so dance good.”

Paris Jackson

Paris Jackson has a large tattoo on her right forearm of the Frank the Rabbit mask from the movie Donnie Darko and the words “Wake Up.” The bunny’s head is tattooed in grayscale, with splatters of blue paint behind it.

After turning 18, Paris Jackson covered herself with a large amount of tattoos in a short period of time.  This one on her arm is the largest so far.  Responding to critics, she wrote an instagram post explaining that her tattoos cover up scars from self-harming and replace them with meaningful works of art.

the craftsmanship of tattoos will always be a controversy. some people like them, some people absolutely hate them. i appreciate art, i always have. especially when that art means something to me. today i can look at my inner forearms and see art that has meaning for me, i don’t see a dark past anymore. my scars and past of self-hatred have been covered by loving marks, creativity, ingenuity.. and depth. sure i will always carry my past with me, but i see ink as a way of changing for the better, always improving. they represent strength for me. i look back at my old self and then i look in the mirror, and i see a fighter looking back at me. i’ll always keep fighting, and encouraging others to stay strong. we all go through hell every now and then but it makes us the warriors of love we were meant to be. so to anyone struggling, it gets better. you’re not alone.

Scout Taylor-Compton

Scout Taylor-Compton has three separate quotes tattooed on her left shoulder blade. She started out with just the top two lines, which are lyrics from the Mumford & Sons song “Awake My Soul.” They say “In these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die. Where you invest your love, you invest your life.”

Next she added the inspirational phrase “anyone who thinks sunshine is pure happiness / has never danced in the rain.”

The final quotation that she got tattooed is “Darlin’, forever is a long, long time / and time has a way of changin’ things” which comes from the Disney Movie The Fox and the Hound.

Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried and two of her friends and co-stars have matching “minge” tattoos on their feet.  To her minge just a funny nickname, even her instagram handle is @mingey.  But it’s a very vulgar slang term in the UK, describing a woman’s hairy labia.

The joke originated on the set of the 2008 film Mama Mia!  Actor Colin Firth would say “minge” and Amanda, being American, didn’t know what it meant.  British actress Rachel McDowall had to explain it to her.  Rachel has a bunch of tattoos but Amanda had never gotten one before and was curious what it was like.  So she got the matching “minge” tattoos with Rachel and a third Mama Mia! actress Ashley Lilley.  The three of them got to be very close during the filming of the movie.  She told Seth Meyers:

We’re best friends, my girlfriends Rachel and Ashley. We got “minge” tattooed on our feet. It’s a term of endearment and in England it means ‘vagina.’ But in the U.S., where I spend most of my time, it just doesn’t mean anything.  So we commemorated our friendship with “minge” tattoos.

It turns out she’s not so into tattoos and probably won’t get another, at least not on her own.  She told 5 News:

I didn’t really love the experience — I liked the bonding experience I had with my girlfriends.

However she loves the resulting tattoo and told Chelsea Handler:

It’s to make me laugh, and every time I look at it, I do.

People in England aren’t so amused.  When she first got the tattoo she would cover it up with makeup when coming to the country.  Describing the reactions that she gets to the vulgar ink while in the UK, she says:

They roll their eyes, it’s always a judgement.  Which is fine.  It’s fine because it means so much more to me than vagina.
