Ashlee Simpson’s very first tattoo was a black outline of a star that she got on her left wrist in 2004 to celebrate the completion of her debut album Autobiography. She told MTV “The first tattoo I got was a star and I got that with a few of my best friends. I have that one when I finished my first record and I have ‘Love’ on my other hand when I finished my second record.”
The tattoo on Yasmine Yousaf’s right middle finger commemorates the release date of Krewella’s debut full-length album Get Wet. It says “09-24-13” for September 24, 2013.
Katy Perry got this tattoo of the Roman numeral XLIX, which represents the number 49, following her halftime show appearance at Superbowl XLIX. Katy performed a medley of her greatest hits and introduced the world to the iconic “left shark” dancer during a rendition of “Teenage Dream.” Superbowl 49 took place on February 1, 2015 and Katy got the tattoo only a few hours after the show as part of her night of celebration. In August 2009 Cassadee Pope got another bird with a banner reading “BND” on the opposite side of her arm from the first. “BND” stands for “Believers Never Die.” Cassadee got this tattoo after her band Hey Monday opened for Fall Out Boy on the Believers Never Die Tour Part Deux in April and May of 2009. Neon Hitch has a tattoo of an anarchy symbol on her right leg, just above the knee. It is a tribute to her debut full-length album called Anarchy as well as her anarchist attitude and free spirit. In her song “Anarchy” she sings “I don’t play by the rules I’m an anarchist…Anarchy made me, understand me. You don’t understand me…Welcome to me and my anarchy.”
Iggy Azalea got this tattoo of a number “1” on her right forearm in 2015 and later covered it up with the mane of her horse tattoo.
The tattoo most likely celebrates the success of her single “Fancy,” which was a number 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. She was, at the time, only the fourth female rapper to ever top the chart (Cardi B later became the fifth) and with seven weeks at number 1 she had the longest reign. Having spent the previous few years building up her career in the UK, she had never charted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at all prior to the release of Fancy. With her feature on Ariana Grande‘s “Problem” in the number 2 spot while “Fancy” was number 1, she tied the Beatles as the only artists to have their first two chart entries simultaneous occupy the top two spots.
Ultimately success was a double-edge sword for Iggy. She never expected the level of success that she had and was unprepared for the scrutiny that came with it. Her tendency to lash out at perceived criticism kept her in the headlines for the wrong reasons and caused the public opinion to turn against her. That might explain why she covered up the tattoo. She told Zane Lowe:
I didn’t expect to get a number 1 hit. I never thought I would have that level of success, just as a female rapper because it’s really really hard when that’s what you’re doing. I just kind of thought if I could skate by and make a living off it and be able to do shows, that was kind of my expectations. It ended up being way, way bigger than that. And the things that come with that, like the debate or…being followed by paparazzi everywhere and that level of attention is very claustrophobic and it kind of makes your decision-making sort of a bit whacked out when you’re living in a bubble that you have to create to try to protect your privacy…. At that time…I really couldn’t get control of it and it was just tumbling and tumbling.
Now she doesn’t take everything so personally and as a result she feels much more in control. As she attempts to make her comeback, she cares more about reconnecting with her original audience of rap fans than having crossover pop hits.
Niykee Heaton got this “BI XI VI” tattoo on her hip to commemorate her debut EP “Bad Intentions.” She got the tattoo in January 2014 when the title track was released as a single, though the EP was not released until September 2014. “Getting my 4th tattoo. It’s very meaningful… also happens to be the name of my EP…” she tweeted. The letters “BI” on the tattoo are an abbreviation for the album title “Bad Intentions” while “XI” and “VI” are roman numerals for 11 and 6. “The road to hell is paved with good intentions. But the way to the top is paved with bad ones,” she wrote.
Kesha has the word “YEAH!” tattooed on the inside of her right foot. A friend gave her this tattoo in 2009 on the night that she finished her debut album. (more…)
Kesha got this homemade cross tattoo on her wrist in celebration of completing her first album in 2009. A friend did the tattoo using a safety pin and pen ink.
She told Details “I had just finished my record, so that night we got a little crazy, and we thought it was a really good idea to give each other tattoos to symbolize such a special event in my life. So he gave me a cross. Or one could call it a t. Or an x.” (more…)
Jessica Plummer got an outline of an elephant tattooed on the inside of her right upper arm in November 2013. Elephants are one of her favorite animals and the tattoo also symbolizes being a part of the band. “I wanted a tattoo to represent Neon Jungle and also family, #ohana AND THEY LOVE PEANUTS!” she tweeted.
