Minimalist Tattoos

Maggie Lindemann

Kelsea Ballerini

Kelsea Ballerini has a tattoo of a square inside a circle on her left wrist as a tribute to her song “Square Pegs” and its message of non-conformity. She told Ty Kelly and Chuck:

“My third tattoo is because of my song called ‘Square Pegs.’ The hook is ‘square pegs make the world go round’ and it’s about embracing what makes you different and knowing that flaws are not a bad thing. It’s what makes you who you are and embracing that. I got that tattoo in L.A.”

The feeling of not fitting in isn’t unique to Kelsea. She wrote this song trying to capture a universal feeling that everyone deals with sometimes, telling Radio Disney:

“A square peg, it’s someone who doesn’t necessarily fit in the mold of whatever normal might be. And I think we all have those moments of feeling like we don’t fit, like we’re the square peg….I’ve spent a lot of my life wondering where and how I fit, and I’m starting to find that there’s a lot of beauty in not fitting. I really wanted a song to capture that….Being normal can be a little boring sometimes. I think that being different is exciting.”

Many fans of the song have their own versions of this tattoo — including fellow country singer Levi Hummon. They got their tattoos together following their sold-out concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, CA on November 23, 2015. He told Mega Country:

“After the show we got very, very excited. I ended up getting a matching tattoo with Kelsea Ballerini. It’s currently on my hand. It’s actually her song, square peg in round hole.
And it’s about being a creative person, not being able to fit in necessarily, so I thought it related to me.”

Her makeup artist Meegan Pearson and some other members of her crew were also part of the matching tattoos.

Alexis Ren

Alexis Ren already had an “ace of spades” tattoo behind her ear, but she added another spade logo ♤ in a more prominent location on her middle finger knuckle.

Both tattoos pay tribute to her little brother Ace, who is the baby of the family and is much younger than Alexis.

Rather than have the same tattoo in two places, she covered up the original spade behind her ear with a planet design.

Sophie Turner

Sophie Turner got this infinite triangle tattoo on her upper left arm in July 2018.  The geometric design looks like three overlapping triangles but it is actually made up of one continuous line that weaves over and under itself.  It resembles a minimalist version of both the Viking valknut symbol and the classic impossible triangle illusion.

Adding to the cryptic tattoo are three lowercase Greek letters on each corner of the triangle: lambda (λ) on top, epsilon (έ) on the right, and phi (φ) on the left.

This is a matching tattoo that she shares with her brother Will.  We don’t know why they chose these letters, but their tattoo artist Maxime Plescia-Buchi says that Sophie and Will designed the tattoo themselves.

Sophie Turner got a minimalist rabbit tattoo on the back of her right upper arm from artist Curt Montgomery in March 2018.

She hasn’t publicly explained its meaning, but it may have something to do with fiance Joe Jonas.  The very first photo ever seen of the couple, possibly the first time they met, was at a Halloween party in 2016 where Sophie was dressed as a rabbit and Joe wore a dalmatian costume.

But maybe we’re reading too much into this and she just thinks bunnies are cute.

Joe Jonas got his own tattoo at the same featuring a drawing of a woman that many people thought looked like Sophie’s Game of Thrones character Sansa Stark.  However Joe has denied this, telling The Fix “It’s quite funny and a little disappointing probably for a lot of fans of my fiancée that it’s really just a picture of nothing.” He saw the drawing in Curt Montgomery’s studio and thought that it looked cool.

Sophie Turner paid tribute to her role as Jean Grey in the X-Men movie series by getting a tattoo of the X-Men logo on her left side.  It’s not known exactly when she got the ribcage tattoo, which was first seen at the Beijing premiere of X-Men: Apocalypse in May 2016.

Rather than getting the classic X-Men logo, which has much thicker lines, her tattoo shows as updated version which serves as the logo for Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters in the film.  Sophie played a younger version of Jean Grey who was a student at the school.  She will resume her role as a more mature Jean Grey and alter-ego the Phoenix in the 2019 film X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Fellow actress Alexandra Shipp, who plays Ororo Munroe / Storm, has a matching tattoo.
