Elbow Tattoos

Sophie Turner

Sophie Turner got matching “07.08.09” tattoos with her on-screen sister and off-screen best friend Maisie Williams, representing the date that they found out they had been cast on Game of Thrones. Maisie’s is in red ink on her left arm, while Sophie’s is on her right arm in a flesh-colored ink which makes it extremely subtle. “I got it in peach because my mom was like ‘make sure it doesn’t show up.’ But now I’m showing the world,” she told E! Live from the Red Carpet at the 2016 Emmy Awards, where she first revealed the tattoo.  The tattoo was only a few days old at the time so it will become even less noticeable as it ages.

They got their tattoos from artist Kat Paine at Belfast City Skinworks in September 2016. Game of Thrones had already announced that it would be ending after the eighth season airs in 2018. The tattoo is somewhat of a celebration of making it to the end of the show, though it may be premature as Sophie joked that she still doesn’t know whether her character Sansa Stark will actually survive. She’s seen the scripts for season 7 but season 8 hasn’t been written yet. Sophie and Maisie both have major roles in the show, but Game of Thrones has a reputation for killing beloved characters.

We were always planning from season 1, if we make it all the way through, hopefully we could all get a matching wolf or something. But we don’t know if we’re gonna make it, so Maisie and I were like “ok let’s get these ones before anyone kills us.”  Which is so possible!

Finding out on August 7, 2009 that they had landed such a major role was hugely significant for Sophie and Maisie, who had both never acted on screen before, even though they hadn’t met each other yet at the time. (more…)

Ayesha Curry

Ayesha Curry has this little “><” greater than/less than symbol tattooed on her elbow to remind her to live in the current moment. Her husband Stephan Curry has a matching tattoo. Rather than getting them together, it seems that Ayesha got hers first and Steph was so inspired that he got his own a month later.  On October 1, 2014, Ayesha shared a photo of her tattoo and explained:

My new little reminder to be present. We get so wrapped up in what needs to happen next that we forget to enjoy the beauty of what’s happening right NOW. Right here, right now. Enjoy the blessings you already have. #onemomentatatime #iampresent #grateful

Then on November 7, 2014, she posted a picture of both tatts and wrote:

@wardell30 copied me ☺️? #hisswagmatchmine

Maggie Lindemann

On August 8, 2016, Maggie Lindemann  showed of a new tattoo on the inside of her left elbow which says “not afraid” in red ink.  She appears to have scars from self-harming on this arm just below the tattoo. She has opened up in the past about her struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts.  “Suicide isn’t a fucking joke,” she wrote in a tweet back in July 2015.  In another tweet, which has since been deleted but is archived in this article, she wrote “suicide is something I’ve struggled with since I was little. It’s been a thought all my life.  [People] don’t understand how big of a deal it is.”

In separate set of tweets from March 2016, she wrote “depression is a very real thing. it’s not just being “sad” it’s way deeper than that. it’s a crunching, suffocating disease and it’s not something that shouldn’t be taken lightly. suicidal thoughts aren’t ok, if you have thoughts of killing yourself PLEASE tell someone you trust and if you don’t think you can, tell me and I’ll do everything I can to be there for you and get you help. I hate seeing so many people hurting so bad. I have been there before and I can tell you it gets better. It may take awhile but I promise you it does.”
