Bird Tattoos

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose has a blue swallow tattooed on the back of her neck. Swallows are a common traditional sailor tattoo representing freedom.

This is one of Ruby’s older tattoos and she has had it re-worked. Pictured top-right is the original tattoo in 2010, which was smaller and was just an outline. The cover-up is filled in with shades of blue and looks more cartoonish.

Iggy Azalea

Iggy Azalea was spotted with what appears to be a huge new tattoo sleeve on her right arm at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in Sydney on November 16, 2016.
Apparently this is a black and gray half-sleeve tattoo that extends from the back of her right hand, up her forearm, at least to her elbow and it seems to includes images of birds and flowers.

Paris Jackson

Paris Jackson got this tattoo in memory of her father, the legendary “King of Pop” Michael Jackson, who died on June 25, 2009.  The design comes from the cover of Michael Jackson’s 1991 album Dangerous, which was designed and painted by Mark Ryden. Paris’ tattoo features a menagerie of animals which are outlined in black ink, though they appear in full color on the album.  At the center of the tattoo are Michael’s eyes with a curl of hair in his face. Unlike the surrounding designs, this part of the tattoo is fully shaded in black ink.

She got the tattoo from artist Justin Lewis in May 2016 and shared a picture of the new ink on twitter with the caption “Never forget your roots. Always be proud of where you came from.”

Paris Jackson

Paris Jackson’s ribcage tattoo is inspired by musician Butch Walker.  It says “I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart” which is the title of Butch Walker’s fifth album, released under the name Butch Walker and the Black Widows in February 2010. To the left of the writing is an outline of an upside-down dead bird, which also appears on the album cover.

Rihanna

In June 2012, Rihanna covered up her music notes tattoo and replaced it with a large Egyptian falcon. She shared a picture of the ink on twitter with the caption “Falcon: a light that shines in the darkness! Never close their eyes during sleep.” Bang Bang – who inked this tattoo – told US Weekly “It’s the first tattoo she wanted as a teen….She wanted it across her back back then.”

It appears as if the bird has been tattooed in a way to look like a handgun, although Rihanna could have gotten the inspiration for the tattoo from a 2,300-year-old faience falcon. The falcon is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where the tattoo artist does most of his work.

Rihanna told Oprah the meaning of her tattoo: “Back in the day, they would carve into the walls and they would carve a falcon, because they didn’t have another way of saying a king in the sky.” (more…)
