Career Tattoos

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie got two tattoos on her left foot during the filming of her movie Suicide Squad. One she gave herself and the the other was a swap with co-star Cara Delevingne.

She bought herself a tattoo gun on eBay and brought it to the movie set. A large group of cast and crew members took Margot up on her offer to get matching “SKWAD” tattoos, but Will Smith was among the few who declined. “I’m a grown-ass man,” he told ET. “Margot comes bounding into work with all of her 24-year-old glory, and it’s ‘Guys! Guys! I got a tattoo gun! I got a tattoo gun! We’re all getting tattoos!’ I was like, ‘No, we’re not.'” Although Will didn’t want a tattoo for himself, he ended up participating in the event by giving a tattoo to actor Joel Kinnamen.

He may have dodged a bullet. Most of Margot’s tattoos turned out ok, but she made a spelling mistake on her very first try, writing “SWAD” instead of the intended misspelling “SKWAD.” That unfortunate mistake is branded on the arm of an assistant Simon. Luckily she got all the rest of them right, including the “SKWAD” tattoo that she gave herself on the inside of her left foot. “When we were shooting Suicide Squad we all got Skwad tattoos,” she revealed on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. “I gave myself a tattoo on my foot.”

Margot and Cara Delevingne also decided to give each other smiley faces on the bottom of their toes, which they dubbed “toemojis.” Margot gave Cara smileys on all five toes and Cara gave Margot one tattoo on the underside of her big toe. The x’s for eyes and sticking out tongue make it resemble the iconic logo of grunge rock band Nirvana.

“We did toe-mojis, we were calling them, where we’d tattoo the bottom of our toes with, like, little faces,” she told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. “But the thing about tattooing the bottom of your toes is that it rubs off after a while, so we have to keep redoing them.”

Now that her tattoo talents have become known, friends have started asking her for commemorative ink. “At first I had to really beg people. And then it became a thing and people ask me now. They’re like ‘Oh I’ll get one. Yeah, that’d be funny,'” she told Colbert. At least two friends at Margot’s wedding to actor Tom Ackerley received roman numeral “XIX” (19) tattoos as a tribute to the date of the December 19th 2016 event.

She also tattooed some friends for her own birthday back in July 2016, when her tattoo gun was still new. “On my birthday, my friends were like ‘what do you want for your birthday?’ I was like ‘I just want to do more tattoos.’ When I had just started. So I tattooed a little girl holding a balloon.” She drew Jimmy Fallon a sketch of the design and even he had to admit it was pretty damn cute!

All in all, she’s given out around 50 tattoos. “I’m getting worse!” she joked “I remember my first couple I was like ‘I’m really impressed with myself’ but it’s gone downhill since then.”

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose got this “MTV” knuckle tattoo to commemorate the time that she spent as an MTV VJ in her native Australia. She began working for the network after winning a nationwide search for a new host in 2007. The blue ink letters are placed on her middle knuckles, below the larger “Just Love” knuckle tattoo.

She has expressed her gratitude towards MTV in a few tweets. “Forever indebted to those who believe in me and I will never take that for granted. From my family to MTV to everyone I’ve met till now,” she wrote. “Feeling blessed, never thought I would see the day I’d be working for MTV, In NY for FW AND an agency like NEXT believes so much in me.”

Ruby Rose

Ruby Rose has a tattoo along her right collarbone which says “Maybe she’s born with it” to commemorate her modeling work with cosmetics brand Maybelline New York, whose advertising slogan is “Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s Maybelline.”

Ruby has been the face of Maybelline cosmetics in her native Australia since 2010. She has commended the brand for selecting a tattooed and androgynous person like herself to be the face of a traditionally feminine brand. “4 years ago @maybelline @mnyau took a big risk and chose a tattooed rock chick to be the face of their iconic brand,” she wrote on her instagram when she got the tattoo done in March 2014.

But the biggest reason she was so compelled to get the tattoo is that the brand supported her even when she was going through personal turmoil. “I really just wanted to remind myself that a brand like Maybelline – an internationally known brand, stands by me when I don’t believe in myself,” she revealed in an interview with The Carousel. “With my depression, when I went into rehab and took time off work and they were like ‘No, we want you to be healthy, you’re a human being,’ and that’s actually a big thing for a brand to do, surprisingly.”

Tove Lo

Tove Lo celebrated the release of her sophomore album Lady Wood by getting this tattoo on her arm on November 27, 2016, a month after the album’s October 28th release date.  Tattoo artist Mark Lonsdale created a simple minimalist outline from Tove Lo’s new vagina logo, which was designed for this album cycle.  The illustrated image shows the full vulva with labia surrounding the vaginal opening. The circle at the top and cross at the bottom together represent the female symbol ♀ while the circle on its own is a clitoris.  This logo appears on the Lady Wood cover art in place of the letter “O”s in her name.  She and her whole tour crew have matching vagina jackets.

Tove Lo wrote an essay for Teen Vogue where she explains that the female anatomy is nothing to be ashamed of:

To some people “showing off” the vagina in any way is seen as something shocking and scandalous. I don’t know if it’s their religious or cultural beliefs that make them think it’s something to be ashamed of, but I know for sure I don’t feel that way: You should be proud of your vagina — it’s a cool and positive part of you! Being open and free about the body and self-love (the way I am) can be provocative — but that doesn’t mean that it’s bad or dangerous.

My vagina tattoo reminds me not to make myself smaller, which is often what’s expected of women. To be loud is to be seen as being a troublemaker. As girls, we’re often not encouraged to speak up. I’m allowed to claim my space. The symbol, which is also on the cover of my album Lady Wood, is a reminder to go for the things that scare you but also give you a rush. People tell me all the time that I’m a chick with balls. It’s supposed to be a compliment, but really it’s insulting. Women don’t need balls to be brave. Our vaginas will do just fine.

The album title Lady Wood itself shows how female sexuality and female power in general is often viewed through a male perspective.

Rihanna

Rihanna’s second tattoo was two music notes on the inside of her right foot. The notes are a treble clef and sixteenth note. It is believed top be inspired by her music career, as she was just starting out in the music industry at the time.

She got the tattoo in Australia while she was in the country to perform at the Universal Music showcase on May 31, 2006.  She kept it for many years, but eventually had it covered with a large falcon in June 2012.

Sophie Turner

Sophie Turner got matching “07.08.09” tattoos with her on-screen sister and off-screen best friend Maisie Williams, representing the date that they found out they had been cast on Game of Thrones. Maisie’s is in red ink on her left arm, while Sophie’s is on her right arm in a flesh-colored ink which makes it extremely subtle. “I got it in peach because my mom was like ‘make sure it doesn’t show up.’ But now I’m showing the world,” she told E! Live from the Red Carpet at the 2016 Emmy Awards, where she first revealed the tattoo.  The tattoo was only a few days old at the time so it will become even less noticeable as it ages.

They got their tattoos from artist Kat Paine at Belfast City Skinworks in September 2016. Game of Thrones had already announced that it would be ending after the eighth season airs in 2018. The tattoo is somewhat of a celebration of making it to the end of the show, though it may be premature as Sophie joked that she still doesn’t know whether her character Sansa Stark will actually survive. She’s seen the scripts for season 7 but season 8 hasn’t been written yet. Sophie and Maisie both have major roles in the show, but Game of Thrones has a reputation for killing beloved characters.

We were always planning from season 1, if we make it all the way through, hopefully we could all get a matching wolf or something. But we don’t know if we’re gonna make it, so Maisie and I were like “ok let’s get these ones before anyone kills us.”  Which is so possible!

Finding out on August 7, 2009 that they had landed such a major role was hugely significant for Sophie and Maisie, who had both never acted on screen before, even though they hadn’t met each other yet at the time. (more…)

Both girls got the same tattoo just below their elbow, but Maisie’s is on her left arm while Sophie’s is on her right.
