Anne-Marie has had this tattoo on the left side of her upper back for a few months now. We can’t tell what the whole tattoo says, but the first word seems to be “Family.”
She has a close relationship with her family members and her twitter history is full of sweet messages to them. She calls her father Wayne Nicholson “the best dad in the world,” mother Sue “so special and kind and perfect,” and sister Samantha “the most beautiful, amazing human in the universe.” She tweeted “Also I’m the luckiest human to have the best, most supporting family ever. #homesick“
Bernice Burgos has the word “love” inked on her right index finger.
Lucy Hale and her older sister Maggie got matching tattoos in memory of their late grandmother. The sisters both inked “I love you” on their right forearm in their grandmother’s own handwriting. Lucy showed off the matching tatts on her instagram and wrote:
Nothing says sisterly bonding more than permanently tattooing your body. After years of wanting our grandmothers writing, we did it! Our Grammy was our favorite person & now she’s even more a part of us. Also, my sister is a badass who raises two kids, teaches combat classes AND goes on tattoo runs with her baby sister. Also, ouch. This one hurt.
Lucy’s grandmother is still a major part of her life even after she passed away. She attempted to connect with her grandma on an episode of E!’s Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry and said:
I definitely felt like I was with her today, but then again I always feel close to her…I definitely always feel her presence.
Me and my sister talk about it all the time that we wish she could be here to see what I’ve done. I don’t think many people thought in my family that [my career] would be what it is, but I always think that she did.
This tattoo, which they got in July 2018, is actually the second tattoo that Lucy and her sister got together to honor their grandmother. She already had a sun on her upper back.
Maggie Lindemann has a tattoo on the back of her right arm which says “Depression & Obsession,” inspired by the song of the same name by alternative rapper XXXTentacion. She was a fan of his music and was saddened by his June 2018 murder. This song in particular relates to her own emotions. She has struggled with depression her whole life, has written a song of her own called “Obsessed,” and once tweeted his lyrics “depression and obsession don’t mix well.”
Kelsea Ballerini has a tattoo on her ribcage which says “Love. love.” The word “love” appears twice because it’s in the handwriting of each of her parents.
The tattoo also celebrates a major milestone in her career, her debut single “Love Me Like You Mean It” hitting number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. She was the first female solo artist since Carrie Underwood to have her debut single top that chart and the first ever to achieve that feat while on an independent label. She told Ty Kelly and Chuck:
The week that ‘Love Me Like You Mean It’ went No. 1, I received letters from my mom and dad. I was in New Orleans, and I took the letters and got ‘love’ tattooed in my mom and dad’s handwriting.
Kelsea Ballerini has a tattoo on her left forearm with the line “how sweet the sound” from the song “Amazing Grace.” It’s special to her because it was the first solo that she ever sang in her church choir. Singing was always a big part of her life, but she never thought that she wanted to make it a career until she discovered her passion for songwriting at age 13. She told CMT:
“I grew up loving music, like, loving it. I was involved in church choir, leading worship and all the choirs in my school — even glee club. I always loved performing and music.”
She got the tattoo in June 2014 and posted a picture on instagram captioning it:
“First song I learned, first solo I sang, and now first tattoo. #amazinggrace”
Demi Lovato got the word “free” in script inked on the side of her pinkie in June 2018. She shared the new tattoo on her instagram story after opening up about her recent relapse six years into sobriety and releasing a new single “Sober” about the experience.
Several members of her team got matching tattoos to show their support. Hairstylist César DeLeön Ramirêz wrote “Everyone deserves to speak their truth! Love is accepting someone for who they are and for who they are not!” Manager Lauren Einbinder, personal assistant Kelsey Kershner, makeup artist Jill Powell, and bodyguard Max Lea were also part of the crew who got inked together in Madrid Spain during the Tell Me You Love Me World Tour.
Alexis Ren tattooed the name “Alexandra” on right forearm for her best friend Allie Michelle. She has described long-time bestie Allie as “my sister, best friend, & partner in crime.”
Lauren Jauregui celebrated her 22nd birthday on June 27, 2018 by visiting artist Jon Boy at Bang Bang’s tattoo parlor in New York City. She got a tattoo that says “I am that I am” written in lowercase cursive letters along her spine. The tattoo expresses her gratitude. She tweeted:
That I am alive because I am alive. Breathing in the oxygen from the trees around me and perfectly made for this perfect planet in the middle of eternity. One with all that is because I am.
This phrase comes from the book of Exodus in the Bible. When Moses first encounters God in the burning bush, God tells Moses “I am that I am.”
Lauren is religious but she believes that the overarching messages of love and compassion in the Bible are more important than specific lines of scripture. She was raised Catholic but disagrees with the church’s views on homosexuality because she believes in the dignity of all humans. She has been known to call out the hypocrisy of politicians who use religion texts to justify their hatred. In a open letter to Trump voters, she wrote:
The God that I have come to know and love is intolerant of judgment and hatred. And I know this, because I was raised Roman Catholic in a Latin household and went to private Catholic school my whole life so I have studied WAY more than most of you have studied the religion or the Bible for that matter.
Her twitter is full of such statements:
You don’t get to deem who God loves.
When your “beliefs” allow for the dehumanization and invalidation of a whole COMMUNITY of people’s existence, it is WRONG. Ask Jesus.
It seems fitting that this tattoo speaks to the ill-defined nature of God, which is interpreted many ways by many people.
The phrase “I am that I am” can also been seen as a statement on self-acceptance. Lauren has dealt with homophobia, sexism and xenophobia but has only become stronger because of it. “I am a bisexual Cuban-American woman and I am so proud of it,” she wrote. She is no longer afraid to be herself and to speak her mind even though record label executives have warned her that she might alienate fans by doing so.
Lauren was accompanied in her tattoo session by a group of her closest friends and family who all got inked along with her. Her brother Chris Jauregui got Spanish writing on his bicep. Their mom Clara got the initials “LCT” on her wrist for her children: Lauren, Chris and Taylor. Longtime friend Erica Timmons got a spine tattoo which says “present in peace” with the same font and placement as Lauren’s.
Lauren’s boyfriend Ty Dolla $ign got tattooed but not with anything matching. The rapper, with whom Lauren collaborated on the song “In Your Phone,” got a skull on his thumb.
