Sadness Tattoos

Noah Cyrus

Noah Cyrus got this “RIDE OR CRY” tattoo on her arm in August 2018 which is a play on the phrase “ride or die.” She has been playing up her “sad girl” persona recently in anticipation of her first headlining tour which is called The Good Cry Tour. “I can’t wait for [my fans] to come experience this sad girl’s dream world,” she says. “We’re either gonna dance or cry the night away.”

Noah Cyrus

This sad little smiley face is one of four tattoos that Noah Cyrus got during a single session with artist Dakota Gomez in August 2018. She already had a similar tattoo on her wrist featuring a happy face with X’s for eyes. This time she got a frowning face with a tear drop below its eye.

Noah’s own sadness comes through in the new music that she’s been writing.  She told Access:

I wanted to let people see where I am in my life right now as a person. Like how I deal with hella anxiety, and I get depression, and I get upset, and I have feelings, and I’m alone on tour sometimes, and I’m sad.

Florence Welch

Florence Welch added the words “Always Lonely” above the eye on the back of her left arm in May 2018.  The phrase seems to be a lyric from her upcoming album High as Hope as she has been selling “Always Lonely” t-shirts in one of the album pre-order packages. Her feelings of loneliness are one of the central themes of the album though it’s not all negative. She wrote in a press release:

There’s a lot of love in this record, loneliness too, but a lot of love.”

Regarding lead single “Hunger,” she says:

“This song is about the ways we look for love in things that are perhaps not love, and how attempts to feel less alone can sometimes isolate us more. I guess I made myself more vulnerable in this song to encourage connection, because perhaps a lot more of us feel this way than we are able to admit. Sometimes when you can’t say it, you can sing it.”
