Halsey has a tattoo on her arm to celebrate her Playboy magazine cover story. Rather than just getting the iconic Playboy bunny logo, her tattoo shows the backside of a pair of jeans with the Playboy bunny on the pocket, complete with the Levi’s red tag.
Her favorite tattoo artist Curt Montgomery first created the design as an illustration which he sent to Halsey to congratulate her. When her cover of the September/October 2017 issue was released she posted the drawing on instagram and wrote “Good time to post this cute drawing my friend @curtmontgomerytattoos gave me!!! Might have to go get this tatted now that it’s official!!!!” She visited his Toronto tattoo parlor in October 2017 when her Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Tour brought her to the area.
Halsey loves looking at vintage Playboy issues and has been a fan of the magazine for a long time. She told Playboy “My first encounter with Playboy was at my aunt and uncle’s house. I think I was like 8 or 9 years old. I’ve been kind of obsessed since. Whenever I’m somewhere that has vintage Playboys I’m obsessed with going through them. It’s been a long road for me and Playboy.”
She feels strongly that being comfortable with her sexuality is empowering and fired back on those who criticized her scantily-clad photoshoot. She posted a reply to a commenter who thought the shoot conflicted with her feminist ideals: “yeah, it’s crazy. I can show my tits in Playboy, perform at the Nobel Peace, speak at the Planned Parenthood Gala with Hillary Clinton, shake my ass on 300 stages, give a speech at the United Nations, do 150 shots of tequila, get a #1 album, and march in the streets of DC in just ONE year!!! Newsflash. A woman can be multi dimensional. #WeAreNotJustOneThing”
Asian Doll has a beautiful detailed mermaid tattoo on her left upper arm.
Before her album and accompanying comic book series Skin&Earth was even released to the public, LIGHTS has already gotten a tattoo on the back of her wrist matching the one on the character Enaia Jin (“En”), who she based on herself. But fans kept getting introduced to more new characters in the Skin& Earth universe with every subsequent issue.
LIGHTS added another tattoo featuring three different logos on her upper left arm after all six volumes had been released and the whole story was revealed. The design and the placement of this tattoo matches characters in the story, just as the tattoo on her wrist did. The mysterious goddess Mitsuki has these three symbols on her arm and she marks En with them as well. The meaning of the symbols is explained by Mitsuki in Issue #6:
“She marked my arm with three symbols: a moon, a soul, and a sun, to remind me of the true order of life. We are born, we live, then we die and give back, skin and earth once again as one.”
Although En is an embodiment of LIGHTS, she jokes that her own look is based on the character rather than the other way around and that she’s cosplaying every day.
Lena Dunham has a handwritten tattoo on her right upper arm reading “Too beautiful to die, Too wild to live,” which is a quote from the 1998 HBO movie Gia starring Angelina Jolie. The movie is about the rise and fall of supermodel Gia Carangi, who became addicted to drugs and died as a result of AIDS.
Angel Haze has a tattoo on her left upper arm with a fragment from a Pablo Neruda poem:
And when you appear, all rivers sound
In my body, bells shake the sky and a
hymn fills the world, only you and I,
only you, my love.
Listen to it.
Anastasia Karanikolaou got this butterfly tattoo on the back of her right arm in July 2018.
Anne-Marie and fellow singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran got matching “Mug” tattoos while on tour together in July 2018. She is an opening act on his ÷ stadium tour, putting her in front of much larger audiences than she’s used to. It’s been helping her to get more comfortable performing and to expose her music to his huge global fanbase.
They’ve been friends for almost 10 years and going on tour together has given them a lot of downtime to hang out. She told Standard:
“I think it’s a little bit different because we’re friends anyway, we make more time for each other just because we’re friends. I think when it comes to the UK tour it was harder for us because we have friends and family coming and we want to make time to see them so we don’t get to see each other much. But when it comes to Europe and America we spend a lot more time together.”
“Mug” is a nickname that they call each other. She got the tattoo on the back of her left arm in his handwriting, posting on her instagram “1 guess what mug wrote this.”
Ed Sheeran’s “Mug” tattoo is on the inside of his right elbow, just above his Irish flag shamrock.
They were inked by artist Tobias Tietchen at his Hamburg, Germany tattoo studio Atelier Tietchen before their concert in Hamburg on July 25, 2018.
This red henna-like design on Paris Jackson’s upper right arm is actually a Voduo symbol. Each spirit in Haitian Voduo, called a “loa” or “lwa,” has its own “veve” which is a drawing that is traced out on floor using powder during a ritual. Paris’ tattoo is the veve image for Erzulie, who is the goddess of love. This loa’s symbols are a heart, a mirror and a fan, and all three of those images can be seen in the veve design in subtle ways. Erzulie is a personification of feminine grace and beauty and is seen as the most human-like of the loas.
Haitian Voduo and other Afro-American Voodoo religions originated from West African Vodun. As practitioners of Vodun were brought over to the Americas as slaves, their practices evolved into religions that are unique to the areas they inhabited, where the traditions of West African Vodun were blended with other local influences — including Roman Catholicism. The Haitian interpretation of Erzulie Freda takes some inspiration from the Roman Catholic devotion Our Lady of Sorrows, iconography of the Virgin Mary as a suffering mother. Erzulie has a deep sadness in her and is often pictured crying.
