Music Tattoos

Ash Costello

Ash Costello has a skull tattoo on her right thumb which is the logo for the band Misfits, who have been one of her favorite bands since she was in high school. She and Nikki Misery got the matching tattoos from artist Danny Anchor in December 2013. She writes: “Too much horror business, driving late at night. Friday the 13th tattoo #themisfits with @danny_anchor”

Ash Costello’s first tattoo was of a music note on the inside of her right elbow.  She chose a round whole note rather than the more commonly tattooed eighth note. This tattoo was covered by the large crow that she got on this arm in 2011.

My first tattoo you can’t see anymore. It was right here underneath the crow. The second I turned eighteen — that night I went out with my all friends, got a tattoo, woke my mother up at 3 am and was like “mom, I got a tattoo. I did it.” She said “No you didn’t, you’re lying.” Like “No, I did.” Poor thing.  And it’s been a running routine ever since.  Every time I get a tattoo.  But it stopped when I finally got my mom’s name tattooed on me. So I figured she couldn’t get mad at me any more and it totally worked.

Iggy Azalea

Iggy Azalea has a tattoo on the side of her right foot that says “Colour me Free.”  It is a message of freedom as well as the title of British singer-songwriter Joss Stone’s 2009 album.  Iggy is a big fan of hers and once tweeted “I used to stan for Joss Stone. That voice!”

She also relates to Joss Stone as someone who crosses the lines of race and nationality in her music.  In response to criticism that her Australian accent is absent in her rapping, she cited Joss Stone and Adele as examples of artists whose English accents aren’t heard when they sing.  And though Iggy didn’t say it outright, both are white artists who draw heavily from black soul music.
