Ruby Rose has the word “MEOW” tattooed on the inside of her lip. “That was the most painful one,” she told Canvas magazine.  “It’s so weird, putting a needle right on your face. Clearly I’ll never have cosmetic surgery, because that was scary enough for me.”

Ruby Rose has a tattoo along her right collarbone which says “Maybe she’s born with it” to commemorate her modeling work with cosmetics brand Maybelline New York, whose advertising slogan is “Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s Maybelline.”

Ruby has been the face of Maybelline cosmetics in her native Australia since 2010. She has commended the brand for selecting a tattooed and androgynous person like herself to be the face of a traditionally feminine brand. “4 years ago @maybelline @mnyau took a big risk and chose a tattooed rock chick to be the face of their iconic brand,” she wrote on her instagram when she got the tattoo done in March 2014.

But the biggest reason she was so compelled to get the tattoo is that the brand supported her even when she was going through personal turmoil. “I really just wanted to remind myself that a brand like Maybelline – an internationally known brand, stands by me when I don’t believe in myself,” she revealed in an interview with The Carousel. “With my depression, when I went into rehab and took time off work and they were like ‘No, we want you to be healthy, you’re a human being,’ and that’s actually a big thing for a brand to do, surprisingly.”

Ruby Rose has a long quote tattooed on the left side of her rib cage which comes from the lyrics of Metallica’s song “Nothing Else Matters.” The tattoo reads: “So close no matter how far / couldn’t be much more / from the heart / forever trusting who we are / and / Nothing Else Matters.” This is one of Ruby’s first tattoos which she has had since she was 16 years old.

Ruby Rose’s first and thus-far only leg tattoo is a unicorn on her right thigh with the name “Lauren,” presumably for an ex-girlfriend, which she got in March 2012. “I thought I’d never fall in love again.. I said i would never get a leg tattoo..I said I’d never get a girls name tattooed. Never say never.” she tweeted. She then posted a picture of the new ink, writing “Everyone keeps asking about the new tattoo, I get these for me, not for anyone else but here it is.. x”

In May 2015, she posted a photo on her Facebook of this tattoo with bandages over it, explaining that she she had just had her first session of laser tattoo removal. “Ouchhhhhhhh!!!!! Ok so.. I never thought I’d see the day.. But I decided to remove a couple of tattoos ( ones that were not done well ) and well.. Yes it’s actually the most painful thing in the world but thank you #laseraway @laseraway for making it bearable. 10 sessions.. 1 down 9 to go.”

However it doesn’t seem that she followed through with her tattoo removal plans — or at least she hasn’t had time to schedule the remaining sessions — as the tattoo is still clearly visible in photos from her August 2016 beach vacation.

Ruby Rose paid tribute to the FX animated comedy television series Archer with this tattoo on the right side of her stomach.  On November 18, 2013 she tweeted about her plans for the tattoo, writing “I love Lorde and Sterling Archer. Forever and ever. Need to get an Archer tattoo, weird If I got a 16 year old lorde tattoo tho.#boundaries” One day later she took the plunge and visited the famous Los Angeles tattoo parlor Shamrock Social Club where artist Louie Perez put her idea into ink.  The tattoo depicts the show’s title character Sterling Archer with his arm outstretched holding a gun.

Ruby Rose has a tattoo on her lower back of a tribal design with a rose at the center, inspired by her name. The regrettable “tramp stamp” was her first tattoo which she got when she was only 16 years old. That was in the early 2000s when lower back tattoos were all the rage, but now styles have changed and the tramp stamp is a much-mocked cliche. Ruby doesn’t love the design anymore but she sees it as a part of who she is.

“It’s a typical tramp stamp, with a rose and an architectural design around it.  It’s ridiculous,” She told Canvas magazine. “It’s such a 16-year-old’s tattoo. I would never get that now. But I would never get it removed either. It’s one of my favorites because it was my first.”
