Julia Michaels had the words “speak up” inked on her throat on May 28, 2017 as a reminder to say what she thinks and be confident.
“I think the [tattoo] that probably best represents me is the ‘Speak Up,'” she told Vevo. “And I think now more than ever I have the opportunity to have an opinion, and to have a voice, and that I should speak up.”
She told MusicChoice:
“I have a tendency to make myself feel really small in vulnerable times. And I just have to remind myself that I’m not. And to say what’s on my mind and know that people are not going to judge me for it. And I’ll feel stronger because of it.”

In February 2016 Melissa Marie Green got a tattoo on her stomach which says “Prima Donna” in huge script letters. In Italian “Prima donna” translates literally to “first lady” and describes an opera singer in a a leading role. The term has been co-opted into English to describe someone with a diva-like attitude who is arrogant and vain. Though some might see this an insult Melissa likes to act like a queen bee. As one half of the pop duo Millionaires, Melissa often sings about being better than everyone else and being high-maintenance.
Alessia Cara has a tattoo of a sailboat on her left wrist to represent “smooth sailing.” For her it is a symbol of hidden strength. She told Billboard:
“It’s a paper sailboat. They seem so frail, but when you put them on water they float. It’s a reminder that even though I’m small and seem weak, I’m not.”
Fittingly, the sailboat-tattooed-singer was chosen to record the theme song for Disney’s Moana, a movie about a girl who sets sail on a makeshift boat.
