Going down Megan Fox’s right side is a passage from German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. It reads “And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” It’s a statement to live your life without fear of judgement because your actions won’t always make sense to people who don’t understand the circumstances.
Joan Jett has a v-shaped swirl tattoo on her sternum to represent the presence of the divine in herself and in every person. “This is an ornate V, with a diamond seed in the middle,” she wrote. “I read that 10,000 to 7,000 years ago, so of the first figurines that were discovered to represent divinity had this V mark on the chest. So I put one on me to remind myself that there is divinity in each of us.”
Eve’s most famous tattoo are the paw prints on her chest which have become her signature — “like a birthmark,” she says. Some of her other tattoos are in more discrete places and aren’t well know to her fans or the public. Her paw prints, however, are almost always on display, even though it’s not intentional. She told Coveteur:
I don’t dress around them. I used to when I was getting started, but now, I never really think about them. Sometimes, they’ll pop out and I’ll be like, ‘oh, right, that’s right. They’re still there.’
The iconic ink actually predates her rap career. She was young when she got the tattoo and was scared of showing it to her mom, especially since she got it on a dare! She knew that she wanted paw prints, but a friend encouraged her to choose this prominent and sexy location. She told Seth Meyers:
It was a dare. A friend of mine at the time — I wanted to get some dog paws, as you do, and I was like ‘I want to put them somewhere cool’ — she was like ‘I dare you to just put ’em on your chest.’ And I was like ‘Really? All right!’ … I didn’t take any persuading at all. And I did it and I was excited about it, and then thought about my mom. And then when my mom saw them she was like “Really? That it the tackiest thing I’ve ever seen.” … Years later I said to her I kinda had a thought like ‘mom, what do you think if I maybe got them removed, just asking.’ And she was like “No, you can’t do that! That’s how people know you!’ … Everybody comes around, it’s fine.
By now the tattoos are a lot paler than when she first started, but she doesn’t have any plans to get them darkened.
I kind of like that they’re faded. They’ve grown with me.
The paws have a little bit of a claw scratch mark above the toes which makes them look even more badass. That blend of toughness and sexy femininity defines Eve’s rap persona as the “Ruff Ryders’ First Lady.”
Sarah Harding has two lines of Spanish written vertically on her right side. Though it is partially obscured by her dress, the visible portion reads “Sé quien eres y … mente no importante…” which means “I know who you are and … mind not important…”
Jessica Jane Clement has a portrait tattoo on her right side of Bettie Page, the iconic 1950s pin-up model. Page is pictured nude, but covering her breasts with her hands.
Margaret Cho has a large purple peony tattoo on the left side of her chest. She has a few peony tattoos because her Korean name means peony.
Zoe Saldana has a ribcage tattoo of Persian writing on her left side, but it’s not known what it says.
Leona Lewis got the flower tattoo on her left side as a tribute to her boyfriend Dennis Jauch. “I was in Berlin with my boyfriend and it seemed like the right thing to do,” she told Fabulous, “I wanted to mark the moment, so I went into a tattoo parlour and had a little flower done. It represents starting afresh, something blooming.”
Kelly Osbourne has a tiny butterfly tattoo below her collarbone on the right side of chest.
Colleen D’Agostino and her bandmates in The Material all got matching tattoos that say “To Life.” Colleen’s is on her ribcage on her right side. “Spontaneous tattoo with my band. Our mantra – To Life,” she wrote.
