Melanie Fiona

Melanie Fiona’s hand tattoo says “Live on Purpose.” She got the tattoo after an encounter with a breast cancer survivor, which made her appreciate her own life and want to live it to the fullest.

She tells VIBE: “I am in a place of excitement and optimism and really being an open vessel to experience everything that life is throwing at me – good, bad, happy, sad, everything. I tattooed this thing on my hand called and it says “Live On Purpose,” and I’m really doing my best to live on that. Do everything with purpose, make decisions, own them, own who I am and be proud of that. I just feel like I’m getting stronger everyday. I’m just ready for whatever life is gonna throw at me, just bring it on.”

Melanie Fiona

Melanie Fiona has a heart tattoo on her left wrist which symbolizes strength and courage. It’s colored purple because of the Purple Heart medals given out by the United States military to wounded soldiers.

She told The Boombox “I got both of my tattoos in moments where I felt that I had grown. My purple heart was right after I finished the Kanye West tour. I was getting ready to release the first single and I had gone through a really bad breakup. What I realized in that moment was that I was stronger than I thought I was in the past. I lived through those experiences, both monumental and dark, and picked myself up and did great things. The purple heart is my symbol of courage and it’s a reminder that I don’t need to give into the weak moments that face me.”

K. Michelle

R&B singer K. Michelle has a large heartbreak-themed comic book tattoo on her upper left arm. The top panel features a figure holding a torn-out heart and proclaiming “I don’t want it anymore.” The bottom panel shows a male cartoon holding up two pieces of a broken heart while a female character kneels down in tears. The speech bubble says “Umm…you can have your heart back. Sorry I broke it.” Off to the left side of the tattoo is cupid shooting an arrow while a person points a gun at him saying “Do not touch me.”

The tattoo started out as just an outline each comic–first the top, then the bottom, and lastly the left side. Later on she had the tattoo colored in and added a background of colorful clouds and red broken hearts.

Though the general theme of the tattoo is depressing, K. Michelle wrote a positive message when she shared a picture of the ink. “After every heartbreak there will be sunshine. Where there is hurt there is HEALING!” she says.
