A few weeks ago I wrote about why I love Hayley Williams’ style, and for this article I’ve chosen to write about another one of my fashion inspirations: DEV. That might come as a bit of a surprise given that I’m a huge pop-punk fan, but I think that my clothing style falls somewhere between casual punk and girly frills. I love the contrast of wearing a super frilly top with acid washed jeans and combat boots.

my attempt to steal DEV's style

What I love most about DEV’s style is that she always looks so put-together. Her style is very glamourous, but still retains a lot of sass. As I’ve grown older I’ve made a conscious effort to try to mature my style. DEV’s fashion sense is a really great example of how to be sophisticated without being boring, which can sometimes seem like an impossible feat. She’s known for wearing crazy sunglasses in most of her music videos, and she always has the coolest jewelry. As far as clothes, I love all of the button-up shirts that she’s been wearing recently. She even wore a pussy bow blouse, which is one of my favorite clothing items.

One particular look that I love of DEV’s is when she wears sleeveless blouses with high-waisted shorts. I chose to emulate this look with item from my own closet. DEV usually wears American Apparel disco shorts, but I’m wearing my favorite sailor shorts from Forever 21. My blouse is also from Forever 21 and is available here. DEV loves breezy sheer sleeveless tops so this looks like one that she would wear. My look is very simple and I’m sure DEV would find a way glam it up with some cool jewelry. That’s why I leave style to the pros!

Cher Lloyd at SXSW

Cher Lloyd performs at the PureVolume House during SXSW in Austin, TX on March 14, 2012

Cher Lloyd has already established herself as a star in the UK with the number one hit “Swagger Jagger” and successful follow-ups “With Ur Love” and “Want U Back.” Now she’s ready to conquer the US, and took her first steps with three performances at the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, TX.

Cher took the stage for her first US performance in an outfit that embodies her feisty spirit and eclectic style. An exposed midriff and just a little flash of butt-cheeks show her sexy side while combat boots and heavy black eyeshadow say “don’t mess with me.” Just minutes after Cher stepped off the stage from her first American concert, we spoke to her about her clothing, ever-changing hairstyles, and tattoos.

Ash Costello's "Rockonista" web series for Hollywood Waste

New Years Day’s record label Hollywood Waste have started a web series called “Rockonista” where singer Ashley Costello takes you inside her world of goth style. In this episode, Ash goes to a thrift store and shows how – with a little creativity – you can make fun and unique clothes for cheap. “Don’t be afraid to go and rummage through, you can find some really amazing stuff,” she says. “Even though I had to go through a lot of Nos, it was worth it to find a few Yeses. You never know what cool stuff you’ll find at a thrift store.”

Using only scissors and safety pins, she transforms overalls into shorts and a simple floor-length dress into an amazing bustle dress. “I really love safety pins on the outside,” she explains. “There’s something really cool and punk and DIY about showing safety pins.” Part of the thrift store game is being able to see potential in items that you might not wear as-is. “When you go thrift shopping you have to have a vision, and see what you can do with what you find,” Ash says.

Ash explains that she also shops in the Halloween costume section. “They could end up being really cool, you never know. If you have the courage to wear them, I think it’s awesome.” Ash definitely has that courage — she wore a zombie bride costume and gory prosthetic wounds throughout New Years Day’s recent tour with Blood On The Dance Floor.

Buzznet's Closet Case Studies with Kerli

Watch Kerli show Buzznet her closet of crazy customized clothes, shoes and headphones. Kerli is extremely creative with her fashion, hand-making or customizing most of her pieces. The end result is a very unified wardrobe that’s full of pastels, lace, and teddy bears – but with a bit of a hard industrial edge.

on making her own fashion:
“A lot of the things I wear I make, or have a really special meaning to me. My mom actually – because I grew up in Estonia and we didn’t have a lot when I grew up – so my mom made all my clothes. So last year she made me this jacket for the “Army of Love” video…She’s the best mom in the world.”

on learning to customize shoes:
“So these shoes actually have a lot of memories for me. I wore them in the “Walking on Air” video. I was working with this amazing stylist Frank. Frank taught me how to customize my own shoes. And at that time I wasn’t even really making, like I was making some things, but I wasn’t really making things the way that I’m making things now. Frank had all these spikes and chains and he was screwing them on these shoes and I was like ‘oh my God, this blows my mind, like you can actually customize and make everything your own.’ So Frank opened a Pandora’s box of customizing everything so now I can’t just wear something the way it is.”

on how the Spice Girls influenced her love of super-tall platforms:
“I really used to be a huge fan of the Spice Girls, and they’re a massive style inspiration for me. I kind of see myself as a gothic twisted Spice Girl.”

on “shoe-lery” (shoe jewelry):
“I wanted to give you this cool idea I came up with, I call it “shoe-lery.” So this is a little elastic strap, an embellishment, and you can take it off and put it on different shoes. I’ve been on tour so I haven’t had time to make more, but I want to make these with all kinds of crazy colors and different styles. I like this idea a lot, it make life really easy.”

on her collection of headphones
“I love headphones because I think music is the most amazing thing in the world and I’m really inspired by everything music-related. These are the the headphones from the “Army of Love” promo shoot that I did. And then I’ve just been adding on to them because I want to make them fresh and new, so I’ve been adding on to them for these different shows. I love headphones and I have a lot of them.”

Ash Costello

Ash Costello's twitter profile photo

New Years Day lead singer Ash Costello took to her twitter to answer fashion questions from her fans. She wrote: “♥I get asked a lot about my personal style, where I shop, hair dye, all that, so girl creeps, nows the time!20 questions, ask me & ill tell!♥”

I already got to ask Ash a whole bunch of my own questions when I interviewed her at Warped Tour in June, but I learned some new things from the twitterview like that she dyes her hair with Manic Panic’s “Raven” black and “Electric Lava” orange dyes and uses their “Vampyre’s Veil” compact. She’s also a fan of Urban Decay’s “Oil Slick” black eyeshadow.

Recently Ash has been talking about dying her hair a silvery white and posted inspiration photos on her tumblr, but she’s concerned about damaging her hair, which is naturally black. “It took me forever to grow it this long, I’d die if I wrecked it. We’ll see!,” she writes. Should she do it? I think it would look great on her with heavy black eyeshadow and red lips, but the damage is a legitimate concern, especially once she decides to change back to another color. Hair dye tends not to hold properly on hair once it’s been bleached, and I can tell you that from “why is this pink? It’s supposed to be red!” experience. I’m glad that mess is grown out!

Porcelain Black shows Buzznet her closet

Porcelain Black gave Buzznet a tour of her closet and talked about some of some of her favorite dresses, coats, hats and shoes. Watch the video above to see all the goods!

on vintage clothes:
“A lot of stuff I wear is vintage. I try not to buy too much wholesale stuff because vintage is an original and you’re not gonna go to the club and see some other girl rocking your shit.”

on ethical fur:
“I definitely don’t buy new furs because I don’t believe in killing animals for fur. But if it’s sitting there and it’s amazing and somebody else didn’t want it, somebody else’s trash could be someone else’s gold, and those are my fur situations.”

on her favorite childhood tee:
“This is my favorite t-shirt — Beaton Colors, this is from my dad’s hair salon in the 90s. I used to wear this all the time when I was little, this was like my favorite shirt, I had them in every color. Actually the girl who plays me in my music video – the little one, there’s a little version of me, there’s a little version of Wayne – she’s wearing this shirt.”

me and Ash Costello at Warped Tour in San Antonio, TX on June 26, 2011

Last weekend I interviewed New Years Day lead singer Ash Costello at Warped Tour. She spills about her recent tattoos and plans for her next, why she see band’s outfits as an important part of the show, and ripping all her favorite tights.

New Years Day are playing Warped Tour through July 10th and are following it up with their own West Coast tour. It’s been a while since the band’s 2007 debut LP My Dear, but it’s safe to say that New Years Day are back. They just put out their new EP The Mechanical Heart on Hollywood Waste Records and released a music video for the lead single “Two in the Chest, One in the Head.”

Choice Quotes:

“I take clothes really seriously because that’s the way I express myself.”

“I sold my iPod before Warped Tour to buy new shoes.”

“Sometimes I worry that [my clothes] say ‘don’t talk to me.'”

“I’ll straight-up wear the most uncomfortable outfit if it’s in the name of self-expression and fashion.”

“What I love about Warped Tour fashion-wise is that people come here and they express themselves fully.”

Sierra Kusterbeck uses her wisdom teeth as plugs

When I had my wisdom teeth removed a few years ago, I was asked whether I wanted to keep the teeth. The choice was obvious – why would I want to throw away something as awesome as my own teeth! Of course the next question is, what do you do with a tooth? And it occurred to me that it would be really awesome to have them silver-plated and turned into jewelry. I still haven’t done that, mostly because I am lazy but I also because I have no idea how one even goes about finding someone to silver-plate a tooth.

Its seems I’m not alone in thinking that wisdom teeth would make great jewelry. Sierra Kusterbeck skipped the step of having them made into jewelry and just put her wisdom teeth into her stretched earlobes as plugs. Responding to criticism over her odd choice of jewelry, Sierra wrote: “If you’ve had your wisdom teeth taken out, you know how it’s the opposite of cheap. This is basically the most expensive jewelry I own!”

Sierra did of course sanitize the teeth before putting them in her ears, but they still aren’t the most practical choice of jewelry. I’m no expert on stretching, but I’ve heard that using plugs which are not round is bad for your ears since the pressure is not applied evenly. And there is nothing to hold the teeth in place. In fact, Sierra says “they fell out from rolling around on stage too much.” I hope she didn’t lose them, because they still could make really awesome plugs if she had them put into a setting.

Ke$ha is also a fan of wearing teeth, though she has an extra resource to tap – she’s asked her fans to send her their teeth. It started with one bizarre gift. She told Rolling Stone magazine “Somebody sent me their tooth, which I now wear as an earring. It’s a molar, I think. I love it when people send me body parts.” Ke$ha decided to take things further, posting on her Twitter a call for fans to send her their teeth along with a PO Box to send them to.

“I’ve received 1 tooth from a fan. I made it into a neclace. But now I really wanna make a fan tooth necklace to wear to an awards show.”

“So. What I’m getting at is please send me your teeth. I’m dead serious. I need your teeth.”

“Wisdom teeth?? Cmon. Yall got some of those laying around.”

It seems to have worked. Ke$ha now has a stockpile of teeth, but still needs to get them made into something wearable.

“THANK U!!My amazeballz fans haveSOfar sent in teeth coming to 164 teeth total. Oh…and one cut off dread.”

“i recycle bodyparts. im looking at all my crazybeautiful fans teeth right now!! i got a box of em and ive never been so excited !!!”

human tooth jewelry by Polly van der Glas

Two Etsy sellers have taken to crafting human teeth into jewelry with very different aesthetics. Polly van der Glas sets her pieces in smooth silver bands that give a modern look and let the teeth speak for themselves. She says “Teeth are sentimental, recycled, beautiful and somehow unusual. We see teeth every day, but in this context they are incredible.” Loved to Death plays up the perceived creepiness of the teeth by adorning them with intricate filigree in a gothic Victorian style.

What do you think – is turning teeth into jewelry awesome or vile? Would you wear your own teeth? Or someone else’s?

Automatic Loveletter is performing acoustically at the Keep-A-Breast Girlz Garage for the entire Warped tour. Her set times are not listed on the inflatable or paper Warped Tour schedules, so make sure you stop by the tent to find out when she is playing.

How would you describe your personal style?
70s male rock star goes female.

Do you have any other inspirations or influences?
Yeah – Southwestern, Navajo, Indian, gypsy, some type of kinda witchy type thing, renaissance, 70s – bell bottoms, boots. I love cutting up my shirts and making them halters like this. Things that dangle, like this bathing suit top. Lots of scarves, you can tie them in places so that they drape. Hats, I’m really into hats.

What do you think that your clothes say about you?
Well if I have to talk about myself that way, I guess I would say that I’m an artist. I like to use what is my body is as like a…I don’t know, you’re putting yourself out there. This is what you’re selling, and this is who I am, and I like to show people with my tattoos and my clothing and all that the kind of person I am.

What are the best and worst trends that you’ve seen around Warped Tour?
Best trend is hair color – blues, greens, yellows, pinks – all of it. Fucking awesome. I have pink in mine, and orange.  I made these 90s Mexican vintage bags I’ve actually been seeing girls wear, so anything like that is pretty cool.  Boots.
Worst – I would say is a lot of makeup. I mean, I get it, you’re putting on a show, but doing that every day and then having to wear it in this heat?  I don’t know, kids are getting really stylish these days. I haven’t seen anything that I’m like “no, don’t do that” – except the banana guy,  “why are you wearing a banana?”
