Buzznet's Closet Case Studies with Kerli
Watch Kerli show Buzznet her closet of crazy customized clothes, shoes and headphones. Kerli is extremely creative with her fashion, hand-making or customizing most of her pieces. The end result is a very unified wardrobe that’s full of pastels, lace, and teddy bears – but with a bit of a hard industrial edge.
on making her own fashion:
“A lot of the things I wear I make, or have a really special meaning to me. My mom actually – because I grew up in Estonia and we didn’t have a lot when I grew up – so my mom made all my clothes. So last year she made me this jacket for the “Army of Love” video…She’s the best mom in the world.”
on learning to customize shoes:
“So these shoes actually have a lot of memories for me. I wore them in the “Walking on Air” video. I was working with this amazing stylist Frank. Frank taught me how to customize my own shoes. And at that time I wasn’t even really making, like I was making some things, but I wasn’t really making things the way that I’m making things now. Frank had all these spikes and chains and he was screwing them on these shoes and I was like ‘oh my God, this blows my mind, like you can actually customize and make everything your own.’ So Frank opened a Pandora’s box of customizing everything so now I can’t just wear something the way it is.”
on how the Spice Girls influenced her love of super-tall platforms:
“I really used to be a huge fan of the Spice Girls, and they’re a massive style inspiration for me. I kind of see myself as a gothic twisted Spice Girl.”
on “shoe-lery” (shoe jewelry):
“I wanted to give you this cool idea I came up with, I call it “shoe-lery.” So this is a little elastic strap, an embellishment, and you can take it off and put it on different shoes. I’ve been on tour so I haven’t had time to make more, but I want to make these with all kinds of crazy colors and different styles. I like this idea a lot, it make life really easy.”
on her collection of headphones
“I love headphones because I think music is the most amazing thing in the world and I’m really inspired by everything music-related. These are the the headphones from the “Army of Love” promo shoot that I did. And then I’ve just been adding on to them because I want to make them fresh and new, so I’ve been adding on to them for these different shows. I love headphones and I have a lot of them.”

Kreayshawn at the VMAs on August 28, 2011 (credit: PR Photos) and in Complex Magazine
I’m just now identifying the sequined Disney dress that Kreayshawn wore at the VMAs at the end of August, but it my defense it was a hard ID. Kreayshawn was interviewing other celebrities on the red carpet, but when asked about her own dress, she said she forgot the designer! My hunch was that is was Jean Charles de Castelbajac, a favorite of Katy Perry’s who is known for incorporating cartoon characters in his designs, but it turns out that the actual designer is much more underground. She wore the matching bustier top in her new photoshoot with Complex magazine, where they’ve properly credited the piece to Australian line Di$count Tra$h. Kreayshawn wears their “Mickey and Minnie Mouse Pop Dream” bustier and dress, which are both sold out, but you can check out their shop for more sequiny goodness.
Lexus Amanda is wearing the Black Veil Brides Allover Print T-Shirt ($24.50), which has the band’s “BVB” logo stamped in different shades of gray. Lexus makes and sells her own feather clip-in hair extensions and here she wears her Striped Feather Piece ($45.00) with black and white and orange feathers.
Chauntelle is wearing the Freckles Sandals in Aqua ($65.00) from BC Footwear, a brand which seems to be giving all of the Eisley girls a ton of free shoes. The black and off white versions of this shoe are currently marked down to $19.97 on Piperlime, though naturally not all sizes are available.
Rapper Kreayshawn and fellow White Girl Mob member DJ Lil Debbie have both worn the “Vanity Slave” cropped tees from MarQueL Fashion. Kreayshawn wore it in Sage for an interview with Karmaloop TV, while Lil Debbie modeled it in Grey, Black, and Paprika. The tops sell for $28.00 each.

Natalia Kills is a big fan of the sunglasses designed by Jeremy Scott for Linda Farrow, wearing two different pairs in her “Free” music video. The first are the silver “Smile C1” ($259.61) which have metal flip-ups of smiley faces with crosses for eyes. Next are the “Wings” glasses reflecting the wings motif used by Jeremy Scott is his Adidas collections. Natalia wears the white “Wings C2” ($313.83) in the “Free” video and wore the black “Wings C1” ($313.83) in a TwitPic.
