Light Bulb Tattoos

Julia Michaels

Julia Michaels has a light bulb tattoo on her right forearm as a symbol of inspirational thoughts. She and tattoo artist London Reese struggled with how to visually represent the sub-conscious mind. Their brainstorming resulted in this unique design of a light bulb containing stars and planets. She told 92.3 AMP Radio:

The light bulb of course is kind of like the bubble for ideas. And I was like ‘How do we embody the sub-conscious?’ Because a lot of the times when I write, a lot of times I don’t know where it comes from. It’s just like a weird, out of body experience. I will be talking to somebody and then all of a sudden — there’s a song. And I can’t really explain it. So I was talking to London, my tattoo artist, and we were like ‘How can we embody that feeling?’ And we came up with the universe in a light bulb.

Lucy Hale

Lucy Hale visited Dr. Woo at the end of July 2017 to get a new light bulb tattoo on her left upper arm. The light bulb is inspired by her name Lucy, which derives from the Latin word “lux” meaning “light.” She told People:

“My most meaningful tattoo is probably my newest, it’s my light bulb that I got on the back of my arm. My name Lucy in Latin means ‘as of light.’ I actually have light tattooed on me too, but this is a representation of my name. It was done by Dr Woo who is just so cool and so artistic and probably my favorite tattoo artist, so I feel lucky that I got an appointment with him.”

Technically, Lucy isn’t actually her first name! Her real name is Karen Lucille Hale but she has gone by Lucy since she was born.

She showed off the vintage-style light bulb tattoo on instagram, captioning it:

Be the light. Thank you @_dr_woo_ for my new tattoo that’s my new favorite. I also feel the need to apologize to my mom every time I get a tattoo…sorry momma!
