Lily Cole has a tattoo on the inside of her right wrist in memory of actor Heath Ledger. Along with the hand-drawn heart, there is a line that goes across her wrist. She wrote on her instagram:
“A heart drawn by someone who reminds me daily to wear my heart on my sleeve. Was thinking of you today. Love always.”
The model and actress starred alongside Heath Ledger as his love interest in the 2009 film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. This was Heath’s final role as he died on January 22, 2008 while the movie was still being filmed. The unexpected death due to prescription drug overdose was an impactful moment in Lily’s life. She told Interview:
“Everyone has to deal with death at some point, and it was the first time that I had to deal with it so close to me. I assume it will stay with me for the rest of my life, as it’s quite a seismic shift.”
She had only met him a few times before they began filming together but they grew close on the set. She saw him as somewhat of a mentor since she was so new to acting, praising both his brilliant acting skills and his generous personality:
“There’s no doubt that Heath was a massive support to me…He was aware that I was nervous, this being the biggest role I’ve ever done, and he was making a real effort to encourage me. And the coolest thing was that he was supportive without ever being patronizing.”
Lily Cole has a foot lettering tattoo on her left foot reading “Ut Apes Geometriam”. The Latin phrase for “as bees, geometry”, inked in a sophisticated Gothic font, is an extract from a quote from Victor Hugo’s dark 19th Century tale The Hunchback of Notre Dame: “I possess philosophy by instinct, by nature, ut apes geometriam”.
