denim vest

from Sierra Kusterbeck's Tumblr

Sierra Kusterbeck’s vest comes from Vans’ collaboration with fashionista Jesse Jo Stark. It’s a punk tradition to take a denim vest or jacket and cover it with pins and patches, but this vest does the work for you with its stripes of leopard fabric and embroidered patches. You can buy Vans x Jesse Jo Born In Denim Vest for $69.50 at PacSun or $70.00 at Karmaloop – or find an old jacket at a thrift store and customize it yourself!

Sierra Kusterbeck posted this photo to her Instagram wearing her Topshop Letterman jacket with a striped bodysuit and ripped denim shorts. I believe that her bodysuit is the Cotton Spandex Jersey Strapless Ruched Bodysuit from American Apparel ($26.00) and her shorts look like the Urban Renewal Cutoff Short from Urban Outfitters ($44.00). I’m not certain on either of these due to the photo quality, but Sierra has worn a lot of American Apparel in the past as well as a few item from Urban Outfitters.

Versa Emerge hasn’t been playing this year’s Warped Tour, but they stopped by their hometown show in Orlando, FL for a special acoustic set in the Keep-A-Breast tent (where Juliet Simms has been playing all summer). Sierra Kusterbeck showed off her new green hair and wore the Fly Rhinestone Ring ($9.99) from the Payless Brash line which she is promoting. The ring and other items from the Brash collection are available online now and will hit stores on August 9th.

Payless ShoeSource announced the launch of their new Brash line of shoes and accessories for teens, and they’ve partnered with VersaEmerge singer Sierra Kusterbeck to serve as the face of the brand. Many of the products are already available through Payless’ webstore and the first collection will hit physical stores on August 9th. Prices range from $6 for hair accessories to $50 for boots. The line will later include beauty products starting at $3.

Brash is meant for girls who have more of a unique and alternative sense of style. Explaining their choice of Sierra Kusterbeck as spokeswoman, Payless CEO LuAnn Via says “Sierra is a Brash Girl and she embodies the brand’s personality — she has a unique tough-yet-girlie style, is tremendously creative with her music and fashion and is a perfect picture of Brash style. We are thrilled to have found Sierra and believe she is a great fit to help us inspire girls to create their own Brash looks.”

Sierra has previously expressed her love of Jeffrey Campbell shoes which are much more expensive, but she appreciates the lower price point of the Brash line. “I love what Payless is doing in general to democratize fashion and this is the first cool, edgy line that’s affordable, which is great for teens. For them, affordable is the best word ever!,” Sierra says. “I often have girls approach me and ask ‘where did you get that?’ and now I can say ‘at Payless,’ which for me is really powerful because the Brash brand can help them achieve the bold style they are after because of its affordability and accessibility. My favorites in the fall line are the Ollie combat boots and the Josie peep-toe wedges — they are sick styles and I wear them a lot and with many different outfits. The beauty items like the eye shadow roller-ball and the lip stain are also amazing.”

In the promotional photo above, Sierra holds a pair of Ollie Plaid Cuff Boots with a rose earring and a feather earring used as boot charms. On her wrist is one of the 3-pack of animal scruchies.

Sierra Kusterbeck uses her wisdom teeth as plugs

When I had my wisdom teeth removed a few years ago, I was asked whether I wanted to keep the teeth. The choice was obvious – why would I want to throw away something as awesome as my own teeth! Of course the next question is, what do you do with a tooth? And it occurred to me that it would be really awesome to have them silver-plated and turned into jewelry. I still haven’t done that, mostly because I am lazy but I also because I have no idea how one even goes about finding someone to silver-plate a tooth.

Its seems I’m not alone in thinking that wisdom teeth would make great jewelry. Sierra Kusterbeck skipped the step of having them made into jewelry and just put her wisdom teeth into her stretched earlobes as plugs. Responding to criticism over her odd choice of jewelry, Sierra wrote: “If you’ve had your wisdom teeth taken out, you know how it’s the opposite of cheap. This is basically the most expensive jewelry I own!”

Sierra did of course sanitize the teeth before putting them in her ears, but they still aren’t the most practical choice of jewelry. I’m no expert on stretching, but I’ve heard that using plugs which are not round is bad for your ears since the pressure is not applied evenly. And there is nothing to hold the teeth in place. In fact, Sierra says “they fell out from rolling around on stage too much.” I hope she didn’t lose them, because they still could make really awesome plugs if she had them put into a setting.

Ke$ha is also a fan of wearing teeth, though she has an extra resource to tap – she’s asked her fans to send her their teeth. It started with one bizarre gift. She told Rolling Stone magazine “Somebody sent me their tooth, which I now wear as an earring. It’s a molar, I think. I love it when people send me body parts.” Ke$ha decided to take things further, posting on her Twitter a call for fans to send her their teeth along with a PO Box to send them to.

“I’ve received 1 tooth from a fan. I made it into a neclace. But now I really wanna make a fan tooth necklace to wear to an awards show.”

“So. What I’m getting at is please send me your teeth. I’m dead serious. I need your teeth.”

“Wisdom teeth?? Cmon. Yall got some of those laying around.”

It seems to have worked. Ke$ha now has a stockpile of teeth, but still needs to get them made into something wearable.

“THANK U!!My amazeballz fans haveSOfar sent in teeth coming to 164 teeth total. Oh…and one cut off dread.”

“i recycle bodyparts. im looking at all my crazybeautiful fans teeth right now!! i got a box of em and ive never been so excited !!!”

Two Etsy sellers have taken to crafting human teeth into jewelry with very different aesthetics. Polly van der Glas sets her pieces in smooth silver bands that give a modern look and let the teeth speak for themselves. She says “Teeth are sentimental, recycled, beautiful and somehow unusual. We see teeth every day, but in this context they are incredible.” Loved to Death plays up the perceived creepiness of the teeth by adorning them with intricate filigree in a gothic Victorian style.

What do you think – is turning teeth into jewelry awesome or vile? Would you wear your own teeth? Or someone else’s?

Sierra Kusterbeck is wearing the Chopped Leather Moto Jacket in Blush ($300) from the London leather brand Muubaa. The jacket has an uneven cut off hem with the frayed lining exposed. It is sold in online boutique Nasty Gal, which is one of Sierra’s favorite stores. Sierra seems to have developed expensive tastes recently, or maybe she got Nasty Gal to sponsor her like she asked for.
