Rebirth Tattoos

Julia Michaels

Julia Michaels added a pink lotus flower tattoo on her right elbow on February 25, 2015. She chose the lotus, which is a symbol of rebirth, because she had just gone through a break-up.

Of all her tattoos, this is the only one that she’s not quite happy with. She told Power 93.3:

I do kind of regret this one. It’s my lotus, but it looks like an artichoke. And I got it the day my ex broke up with me the first time — I know, I’m a mess.  And I thought, like an idiot, that I could combat emotional pain with physical pain. Don’t do it, guys — not smart.

Federica Pellegrini

Federica Pellegrini has a prominently displayed phoenix tattoo running up the left side of her neck. The Arabian Phoenix is a symbol of rebirth from ashes and change and she did this tatoo back on her 17 years when she moved from Verona to Milan.

    Juliet Simms

Juliet Simms got a large tattoo on her upper left thigh of an eagle in flight from artist Robert Atkinson in October 2014.  The eagle is symbol of the ascension of Christ. She wrote on instagram: “Resurrect. New tattoo by the incredible @robertatkinson_tattoo 🙌 I love it Robert thank you!!🙏 Check out his tattoo shop on Ventura in Sherman Oaks! ‘Ten Thousand Waves Tattoo Gallery’ #eagle #tattoos #spiritanimal #robertatkinson #tenthousandwaves”

Kesha got a tattoo of the planet Saturn on her left palm from artist Sean From Texas in November 2015. The tattoo symbolizes that Kesha is going through the “return of Saturn” period of her life.  The planet Saturn occupies the same place in the sky every 29.5 years, and horoscopic astrology believes that it significant when Saturn returns to same place in the sky that it was at the time when a person was born. It is thought that years surrounding the first return of Saturn are when a person becomes fully an adult. This period lasts roughly from age 27 to 31. Kesha, who was born on March 1, 1987, was 28 years old when she got the tattoo.

    Ariel Winter

Ariel Winter has a tattoo of roman numerals “X.III.MMXII” (which means “10.3.2012”) inside her left elbow. Ariel told ET: “This is October 3, 2012 which is the day that I moved in with my sister. It kind of started a new chapter of life for me, so it was really important.” Since then, Ariel has become legally emancipated from her abusive mother.

Her sister Shanelle decided to get the same tattoo to match Ariel’s in November 2016, while Ariel was getting a new tattoo of a spade on her wrist. Shanelle showed off their matching tattoos and wrote “1st tattoo matching sister one of the most important people in my life with a matching tattoo of a very special date.”

    Janel Parrish

Janel Parrish covered up the old treble clef tattoo on her wrist with a lotus flower in May 2015.  The lotus symbolizes survival through hardships. “Finally got my lotus. A lotus is the only flower that can grow in mud. Through darkness blooms beauty if you let it,” she writes.

    Alison Pill

Alison Pill has a tattoo on the left side of her ribcage that says “Be melting snow.” It is inspired by the Persian poet Rumi, who wrote “Be melting snow. Wash yourself of yourself.” It means that you can cleanse yourself and start anew without help from others.

      Skylar Grey

Skylar Gray has a large forest scene tattoo covering her whole back. The tattoo represents a period in her life where she lived in the woods in Oregon before re-inventing herself. This time was essential to her growth both as a person and as an artist.

“I moved into a cabin in the woods and I was broke and I was down on my luck and depressed. It was there that I proved to myself that I could survive anything. And when I came out of the woods I wrote ‘Love The Way You Lie’ and that changed my life forever. So that tattoo represents that whole dream to me.”

The imagery of tattoo includes storm clouds and lightning bolts to represent her struggles and cabin to represent her shelter in the storm. The more lighthearted part of the tattoo is a lumberjack clown which was inspired by her tattoo artist Mister Cartoon’s affinity for clowns.

“I wanted a lumberjack. Mister Cartoon has this signature thing that he does clowns. So I thought, why not just make it a lumberjack clown? Because that’s what I do, I mix weird stuff together. My album is like that, my fashion sense is like that,” she told Amp Radio.
