Pain Tattoos

Alessia Cara

Alessia Cara got a band-aid tattoo on the back of her upper left arm in June 2018.  The band-aid relates to her new music and seems to be a symbol of this album cycle, as she added a band-aid to her beanie girl logo. The lead single “Growing Pains” from her upcoming sophomore album includes the lyrics “No band-aids for the growing pains.” There may be other references as well–we’ll have to wait and see!

Amber Rose

Following her divorce from Wiz Khalifa, Amber Rose tweaked the “Cam” tattoo on her right thumb to say “Pain.” Cam was for the rappers’s legal name Cameron Jibril Thomaz. It’s not a perfect cover-up as the bottom of the letter “P” looks a bit strange, but at least the message is fitting to the situation.

This isn’t the first time she’s had to cover an exes name — the large roses on her arm conceal the name of a high school boyfriend.

Maggie Lindemann

This tattoo on Maggie Lindemann’s bicep, which she got on June 18, 2016, is her fifth overall and her first large piece. It says ‘you built a cast around your broken heart, and signed it yourself. you signed it “they were wrong.”‘ in all lowercase letters in a typewriter-style serif font.

These lines come from the spoken word poem “To This Day” by author Shane Koyczan which is about the long-term effects of bullying. It means that even though bullying has a deep and profound impact and leaves you feeling broken, you have to heal yourself and keep going because you have value and you know in your heart that all of the cruel things that other people have said about you are wrong.

On instagram Maggie wrote:

“this quote means so much to me, so I’m veeryyy happy for it to finally be a part of me, thank you once again @romeolacoste I love it so much.”

She told Ampd Up:

It’s from this poet that is my favorite poet, his name is Shane Koyczan. I just always have loved that poem and it’s always helped me when I needed help. So I just thought, why not get it tattooed on me?

Juliet Simms

On her right thigh, Juliet has some of her own lyrics. It says “Anticipation is killing me when butterflies have knives cutting up my insides,” which comes from an unreleased Automatic Loveletter song called “Someday.” The letters are stacked vertically and after the last words are the Japanese symbols for love and pain in red ink. Juliet jokes that the top symbol looks like a drunk smiley face.
