Demi Lovato added a flock of flying birds on her right forearm surrounding her “faith” tattoo in November 2012. The tattoo takes up the entire length of her forearm and was her first large tattoo. There are twelve black birds with a little swirl behind them. This design later appeared on the cover of Demi’s self-help book Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year.
The birds are a symbol of freedom. She didn’t think much about the number of birds at the time, but she later realized a connection to the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step recovery program, with each bird representing one of the steps towards her freedom from substance abuse. “I love the freedom that birds represent and I didn’t specifically have a huge reason why I got 12 of them,” she told iHeartRadio. “But one day, one of my friends that I was at Sober Living, I was living in her Sober Living house, and they asked, ‘So why’d you get … How many did you get?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve,’ and I was like, ‘Whoa, I didn’t mean to do that.’ But it’s like, it was kind of like a God thing, like I worked the 12 steps, so as I got that while I was in Sober Living, apparently it was really meant to be.”
The tattoo was done by celebrity tattoo artist Kat Von D, whom Demi happened to connect with through a friend. “I wanted more tattoos and I’d never done anything big, and it was very impulsive of me, like the night that I got it. Literally, I had a friend who had a friend that worked with Kat Von D. And so, literally at like 4:00 p.m. my friend hits up her friend, and that guy was out of town but Kat was in town. And so I was like, ‘Let’s get a tattoo,’ which by the way, people like book Kat way in advance! But it was so impulsive, so it was meant to be.”

I love Demi sooo much and she is amazing. I turn 16 on the 22 (2 days after Demi’s!) and I also was having issues like her when I was 11 and 13 but I’m a lot stronger because of her. Demi is my role model and the most inspirational singer ever. She is beautiful and an amazing singer. Anyways her songs make me feel better when I’m having a hard time because I’ve been bullied since I was 10 and it hasn’t stopped but I will keep living on and staying strong with Demi. I’m a huge fan of Demi’s. Her song, ‘Skyscraper’ has gotten me through a lot. She’s such an inspiration, especially since what she’s gone through.
The people who are hating on her, really need to get a life. All the tattoos she has mean something to her. If you don’t understand it, then why criticize? All of these tattoos look like CRAP. On all these famous girls. They’re are just random nothingness here and there. It may be exciting to get them as soon as you’re 18 or barely older than that, but I guarantee you, they will not look so good by the time you’re 60 and your skin isn’t as taut. I used to think in high school, “Oh, I will be covered in tattoos by the time I’m 25” and heeded the advice of adults telling me otherwise. I’m 22 now, happily uninked. Demi Lovato is a real person. That’s hard to find in Hollywood. She has real problems, real issues, she has real feelings. She’s not a singer and an actress just because she wants to be famous or just because she wants people to look at her pose in front of the camera, she’s a singer and an actress because she’s TALENTED and when you have talent like that, you’re going to burst like an atomic bomb if you don’t use it.
Her new song “Skyscraper” is something that I simply don’t enough words of praise for. I could go on for a year just praising this song. I have never in my life felt so much emotion, so much strength, come from an artist in a music video. Never. She’s transparent, like glass, and we can see and feel her light shining through, brazen and bold.
Demi is a skyscraper, and she inspired all of us to be the same. As for the tattoos, people here are so close-minded, living in little USA, as if it’s the center of the world. The USA isn’t the center of the world, people, if you go to Europe, Australia, NZ, tattoos don’t mean anything other than you’re getting a tattoo. Respectable moms and dads get tattoos, kids under 18 get tattoos, it doesn’t say anything bad about your persona or your character, at all. In America though, people are so shallow and hypocritical, you start judging people just because they have tattoos, meanwhile, you bring guns to school and shoot each other. Hypocrites.

Well, haha. I’m a Christian as well and I was looking forward to getting a tattoo when I’m 18 however I did some research. In the bible it clearly states in Leviticus 19:28 “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD. and in 1 Corithians 6:19 “do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You ate not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” I’m happy to see Demi recovering and embracing the faith however I believe she is sending the wrong message on how to show Christianity when she’s on stage holding the mic. But it’s a personal choice and the good Lord still love her and everyone, just saying. So now I’m not getting one. Just honor God through actions thoughts and words. Stay strong Demi. :)

I’m going through most of the things she is or was, and there are times when I do infact want to give up. But I think back to the video I watched of her opening up about her life and how strong she was to seek help. Honestly words can’t describe how inspiring she is to me, and to many other people I’m sure. It would have been so hard to get help, and I’m so proud of her for doing that.
I’ve seen some comments on youtube and things, saying how pathetic it is to be depressed/cut yourself. Seriously people need to grow up. The people saying this have no idea what it feels like, and have no right to say anything on the matter.
I’ve always liked Demi (not in a crazy-13-year-old-girl way and not just for her music), but I truely have so much more respect for her. I can only hope I will be able to push through just like she did, and maybe next year when I turn 18, I will get a tattoo that is meaningful to me because it seems to help her a lot.
