Blackwork Tattoos

Iggy Azalea

Iggy Azalea got a tattoo of a blindfolded horse on her right forearm in July 2016.  Artist Sean Smith used etching lines to create the illusion of shading.  A dark area of the horse’s mane covers her old number “1” tattoo, while the long and flowing mane follows the curves of her existing Venus tattoo.  The was the first of a series of tattoos which she got within the span of a few months to convert this arm into a half-sleeve.  The Venus tattoo stayed but she eventually covered up her old “Trust Your Struggle” tattoo.

Iggy Azalea developed a love for horseback riding during 2015.  One of her new years resolutions was to learn to ride a horse well and that goal turned into a full-blown passion.  She bought two horses of her own named Defender and Strictly Business (nicknamed “Bizzy”).  2015 was a hard year for her career-wise and riding helped take her mind off things.  She tweeted “Horses saved my life and now I have two and it’s all good. Now I have discovered another passion.”

The blindfold on the tattoo could have a few meanings, including keeping calm in the face of danger and blind trust.  The most common reason that owners put a blindfold on a horse is to keep it from becoming frightened.

Julia Michaels

Julia Michaels got a large peony flower tattoo on the back of her left forearm in February 2018. She visited General Electric Tattoo in Van Nuys, CA to get inked by artist Frank Allen, who has done similar blackwork floral pieces on many of his clients. This style uses crisp black outlines with tiny pointillism dots to create an illusion of shading.  Frank had never tattooed Julia before, but he did this inking and the scorpion on her other arm in the same session. “I got to do these 2 on my new Pal @juliamichaels. Thanks for your Trust,” he wrote.

Lynn Gunn

Lynn Gvnn celebrated her 24th birthday on March 15, 2018 by getting a tattoo.  Her band PVRIS was on tour in San Antonio, TX so they met up with local artist Mason Chimato, who also gave drummer Justin Nace a tattoo of Roman numerals on his wrist.

Lynn opted for an intricate Eye of Providence design on her upper back. The all-seeing eye of God has a halo of emanating lines which represent rays of light.  This particular drawing of the symbol, with four shooting arrows and a leafed branch below the eye, is a replica of a woodcut print created by American engraver Alexander Anderson in the early 1800s.

Lynn Gunn got this tattoo on the inside of her right arm following PVRIS’ concert in Houston, TX on October 1, 2017.

The design that she had inked is one of over 200 chapter headings that illustrator Aubrey Beardsley created for the 1893 book Le Morte d’Arthur which tells the tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. This book was the first commissioned work in Beardsley’s short career. Although he died at only 25 years old, Beardsley’s art lives on an iconic example of the Art Nouveau style.

Lynn’s tattoo is true to Beardsley’s style of using only black and white without any gray for a very graphic look.
