Upper Back Tattoos

Maren Morris

Maren Morris’ back tattoo says “It’s a wondrous world of ridiculous things / but nothing so rare as the love that it brings”  which is a line from the song “Christina” by folk singer-songwriter Patty Griffin.  There’s actually a tiny error in the tattoo since the second line should start “with” instead of “but.”

She got this tattoo in April 2013 after putting a lot of thought into planning it.  She shared a photo on instagram back in August 2012 where she edited the lyrics onto her back in two different fonts, trying to decide which she liked better.

Patty Griffin is one of her influences and musical idols.  “Going to see Patty Griffin at the Ryman this evening. I may never come back down,” she tweeted before seeing her in concert in October 2013.

Lynn Gunn

Lynn Gvnn celebrated her 24th birthday on March 15, 2018 by getting a tattoo.  Her band PVRIS was on tour in San Antonio, TX so they met up with local artist Mason Chimato, who also gave drummer Justin Nace a tattoo of Roman numerals on his wrist.

Lynn opted for an intricate Eye of Providence design on her upper back. The all-seeing eye of God has a halo of emanating lines which represent rays of light.  This particular drawing of the symbol, with four shooting arrows and a leafed branch below the eye, is a replica of a woodcut print created by American engraver Alexander Anderson in the early 1800s.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie  has a Yant ViHan Pha Chad Sada tattoo on her back.

This tattoo is an original Sak Yant created by Ajarn Noo  Kanpai especially for Angelina and it was inked ob her back by the ex-monk using steel rods mounted with a surgical steel needle.

The complex design consists of two yants, the upper is a square box with magical text inside of it.  Sak Yant Talisman square represents the four continents and  the four elements of earth, water, wind, fire. Each box contains text but the order of which direction within the square make it impossible for anyone to really know it’s meaning except for Ajarn Noo.

For this special ink, Ajarn Noo Kanpai was flown from Bangkok to Siem Reap in Cambodia, where Angelina was filming. The three Sak yant tattoos she got that day were applied to her back while her ex Brad Pitt was given a Buddhist symbol on his stomach. Ajarn Noo drew designs on both stars using the same ink “to symbolically bind them as husband and wife”, but their marriage fell apart just months later and they separated in September 2016.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie got tattooed by a Thai ex-monk Ajarn Noo Kanpai in Cambodia, where she was filming in 2016. On her upper back she get the Yant Phutson or Yant of the five Gods symbol. This is a very popular and well know talisman for Thai people from the past to the present. It is the highest talisman (A Master Talisman) and multi-purpose. The Sak Yant represents having and acting with great mercy towards yourself and others; Amassing great fortune in both the physical and spiritual realms. Wearing this charm provides good luck and promotion in life.

As well as the other inks done by the ex-monk, this sak yant was applied using steel rods mounted with a surgical steel needle – a much more painful procedure.

Scout Taylor-Compton

Scout Taylor-Compton has a “dinglehopper” tattoo on her back in honor of her favorite movie The Little Mermaid. In the film, Ariel is obsessed with human culture. She finds a fork and since she doesn’t know what it really is, she calls it a “dinglehopper” and uses it to brush her hair.

This tattoo was added next to the existing quotes on Scout’s back from artist Joshua Greener at the Spooky Empire Tattoo Festival in Orlando, FL in April 2017. Of course she went to Walt Disney World while she was in Orlando!

Julia Michaels

Julia Michaels got this tattoo on her upper back which says “Kiss Here” from artist London Reese in August 2017. She describes how the process of co-creating a design with a tattoo artist is similar to writing songs as part of a team. Julia and her co-writer Justin Tranter have written major hits for artists like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. She told Vevo:

You’re trusting somebody to put something so permanent on your body, and with songwriting it’s the same. You’re having somebody come in, and you have to trust this person completely to help you articulate words into a song. And then there’s a trust there. Because of that, you become really close friends with them.  Like London, who does a lot of my tattoos.
