Lucy Hale Tattoos

Lucy Hale got a tattoo of an elephant on her right arm during a trip to Cambodia in May 2018. She and her Life Sentence co-star Elliot Knight visited the country with the charity organization Ripple Effect and got to visit children with special medical needs in addition to seeing all the beautiful ancient temples. Lucy had some crazy experiences during her trip including eating fried tarantulas that she purchased at a local street market, which she says taste like potato chips. She wrote on her instagram:

Peace out Cambodia. – Every once in a while certain experiences and people open your eyes. Grateful for the remarkable time I had & for the beautiful children we met. Being a very small part of something this extraordinary is something that will stay with me for life & I can’t wait to be back to see the kids next year. And to my new friends- I love you guys!

It doesn’t seem like Lucy got to meet any elephants during her brief trip, though Elliot continued on to Thailand after she left and had his own elephant adventure, but surely she saw lots of elephant carvings in the buildings she visited.  The Asian Elephant is now an endangered species but was prevalent through Cambodia in the past and is a common motif in the country’s art and architecture.

She got the little elephant on her elbow inked at Bayon Tattoo, which is named after the Bayon temple in Angkor Wat and is located only a few miles from the historic site.  This parlor does some of its tattoos with the traditional Cambodian bamboo technique, but Lucy opted to get hers with a modern tattoo gun. She showed pictures of the process and the result on her instagram and captioned it:

Tattoos everywhere I go ?

Other members of the tour group got their own matching elephant tattoos on various body parts.

Lucy Hale and her older sister Maggie got matching tattoos in memory of their late grandmother.  The sisters both inked “I love you” on their right forearm in their grandmother’s own handwriting.  Lucy showed off the matching tatts on her instagram and wrote:

Nothing says sisterly bonding more than permanently tattooing your body. After years of wanting our grandmothers writing, we did it! Our Grammy was our favorite person & now she’s even more a part of us. Also, my sister is a badass who raises two kids, teaches combat classes AND goes on tattoo runs with her baby sister. Also, ouch. This one hurt.

Lucy’s grandmother is still a major part of her life even after she passed away.  She attempted to connect with her grandma on an episode of E!’s Hollywood Medium with Tyler Henry and said:

I definitely felt like I was with her today, but then again I always feel close to her…I definitely always feel her presence.

Me and my sister talk about it all the time that we wish she could be here to see what I’ve done.  I don’t think many people thought in my family that [my career] would be what it is, but I always think that she did.

This tattoo, which they got in July 2018, is actually the second tattoo that Lucy and her sister got together to honor their grandmother.  She already had a sun on her upper back.

Lucy Hale visited Dr. Woo at the end of July 2017 to get a new light bulb tattoo on her left upper arm. The light bulb is inspired by her name Lucy, which derives from the Latin word “lux” meaning “light.” She told People:

“My most meaningful tattoo is probably my newest, it’s my light bulb that I got on the back of my arm. My name Lucy in Latin means ‘as of light.’ I actually have light tattooed on me too, but this is a representation of my name. It was done by Dr Woo who is just so cool and so artistic and probably my favorite tattoo artist, so I feel lucky that I got an appointment with him.”

Technically, Lucy isn’t actually her first name! Her real name is Karen Lucille Hale but she has gone by Lucy since she was born.

She showed off the vintage-style light bulb tattoo on instagram, captioning it:

Be the light. Thank you @_dr_woo_ for my new tattoo that’s my new favorite. I also feel the need to apologize to my mom every time I get a tattoo…sorry momma!

Lucy Hale has a little sun tattoo on the left side of her upper back which matches the moon tattoo on her opposite side. It was the first of two tattoos that she shares with her sister Maggie. She told Refinery 29:

“I have a little, tiny sun that I got with my sister in honor of our grandmother.”

Whether coincidentally or intentionally, this tattoo sits near the “light” tattoo on her ribcage and the lightbulb on her upper arm (added later) which are both inspired by the fact that her name Lucy means light. The sun is of course another symbol of light.

Lucy Hale has cursive writing tattooed below her left breast. It says “Courage, dear heart” which is a line from C.S. Lewis’ book The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in the Chronicles of Narnia series:

“But no one except Lucy knew that as it circled the mast it had whispered to her, “Courage, dear heart,” and the voice, she felt sure, was Aslan’s, and with the voice a delicious smell breathed in her face.”

Lucy Hale and her five fellow “liars” on the TV show Pretty Little Liars all got matching tattoos after they finished filing the final episode on October 28th 2016. Each girl got the first initial of the character placed on their index finger because of the shush in the opening credits, which was done exclusively by Lucy until the final season, where all of the girls took turns. Lucy’s tattoo is an “a.” for Aria Montgomery.

On her instagram she wrote “This happened. Thank you @shamrocksocialclub for taking care of us. We couldn’t not get tattoos to commemorate the show! And obviously on our “shh” finger ?” (more…)

Lucy Hale’s very first tattoo was a ribbon bow on the back of neck.  She got the cutesy design inked by Shamrock Social Club artist Dr. Woo before he became one of the most in-demand tattooists in Los Angeles, and she continues to be a fan of his work.

She talked about the tattoo, which was her only one at the time, in a 2012 interview with Maniac Magazine:

My most maniac moment was when I was 19 and I got my tattoo. It’s on the back of my neck. It’s a bow. Luckily I still like it. I got it after a break up and I wanted to do something rebellious, which is a kind of out of the norm for me.
