Julia Michaels Tattoos

Julia Michaels has four gemstones tattooed on her right arm as a tribute to her fans, who she calls “Little Gems.” The most prominent is a heart-shaped pink jewel below her shoulder. There’s also a blue diamond on the outside of her elbow, a round amber stone inside her elbow, and a dark blue rhombus on the side of her wrist. All four gems were inked by artist London Reese in July 2018.

Julia Michaels has talked about how much she hated the lotus tattoo on her elbow, which she got the day than an ex-boyfriend dumped her. She thought it was poorly done and looked more like a “colorful artichoke.” So in July 2018 she had artist London Reese draw an “X” through it and added the words “BAD IDEA” with “BAD” above the lotus and “IDEA” below it. “Because it was. And he was,” she wrote.

Julia Michaels got a large peony flower tattoo on the back of her left forearm in February 2018. She visited General Electric Tattoo in Van Nuys, CA to get inked by artist Frank Allen, who has done similar blackwork floral pieces on many of his clients. This style uses crisp black outlines with tiny pointillism dots to create an illusion of shading.  Frank had never tattooed Julia before, but he did this inking and the scorpion on her other arm in the same session. “I got to do these 2 on my new Pal @juliamichaels. Thanks for your Trust,” he wrote.

Julia Michaels celebrated the holidays with family in a unique way — she and her father got matching tattoos on December 28, 2017. They chose the Golden Snitch from the Harry Potter series inked in vibrant color. Julia’s tattoo is on her upper right arm and her dad’s is on the inside of his forearm.

Her father has come a long way with his attitude about tattoos since Julia started getting inked at age 18. Back then he was apprehensive about Julia getting tattoos and definitely didn’t want any for himself. But seeing Julia’s thoughtful works of art has made him change his mind. She told Universal Music:

The first tattoo that I ever got was this microphone when I was 18. My dad used to be very conservative. And when I told him I wanted to get a tattoo he [said] “I don’t know how I feel about that” but I [said] “you should come with me.” And when he came with me, he was so in love with the process that he now wants to get one with me.

Julia Michaels got this tattoo below her left elbow in December 2017 and it’s still somewhat of a mystery.  It looks like the bust of a statue with its hair in a bun.  The face is totally flat with no facial features and a crude smiley face is drawn on.  It’s a similar theme to the faceless woman on her bicep which is about the feeling of anonymity that she felt was still writing songs for other artists to sing.  The cartoonish face makes us think that this tattoo is about putting on a fake happy face and hiding your real face and emotions from the world.

Radio host JoJo Wright arranged a date with Julia Michaels to get tattooed live on air on November 21, 2017. The iHeartRadio DJ brought one of his personal favorite tattoo artists Mikey Montoya to the 102.7 KIIS FM Los Angeles studios to tattoo him and Julia. Both of them planned their tattoos independently and they don’t match or even relate at all — JoJo got a Mickey Mouse/Jack Skellington mashup.

Julia’s tattoo says “protagonist + antagonist” representing the duality of life. As a songwriter she views everything through the perspective of stories. The protagonist is the main character in a story while the antagonist is someone who gets in the way of the protagonist achieving their goals. Antagonists can be evil villains, but they can also be ordinary people minding their own business whose own goals conflict with the protagonist’s. We are all sometimes the antagonist in other people’s life stories, often without realizing it, when we get a job or an award or even a boyfriend/girlfriend that they wanted for themselves.

She says that this tattoo “is basically me just embracing both sides of my personality.”

This tattoo marks the beginning of Julia began actively working on her second full sleeve. Up until this point the only tattoo on her left arm was the piano which she has had since 2012. But in the following months she covered her whole forearm.

Julia Michaels got this tattoo on her upper back which says “Kiss Here” from artist London Reese in August 2017. She describes how the process of co-creating a design with a tattoo artist is similar to writing songs as part of a team. Julia and her co-writer Justin Tranter have written major hits for artists like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. She told Vevo:

You’re trusting somebody to put something so permanent on your body, and with songwriting it’s the same. You’re having somebody come in, and you have to trust this person completely to help you articulate words into a song. And then there’s a trust there. Because of that, you become really close friends with them.  Like London, who does a lot of my tattoos.
