Halsey Tattoos

Halsey got the Queen of Diamonds playing card symbols tattooed on her temple in June 2018. “Thanks for my first (and only hopefully lol) face tattoo,” she wrote to artist Noah Lee aka Nal.

She captioned a picture of the tattoo with lyrics to her song “Castle,” in which she sings about becoming the queen as a metaphor for coming to take her place in the music industry with the chorus line “I’m headed straight for the castle / They wanna make me their queen.” More specifically, it’s about taking back some of the power from male executives who think that a female performer should look and act a certain way in order to appease the masses. She sings “there’s an old man sitting on the throne that’s saying I should probably keep my pretty mouth shut.” Being a queen is to be a woman who is charge of her own destiny.

Halsey has a tattoo on her arm to celebrate her Playboy magazine cover story. Rather than just getting the iconic Playboy bunny logo, her tattoo shows the backside of a pair of jeans with the Playboy bunny on the pocket, complete with the Levi’s red tag.

Her favorite tattoo artist Curt Montgomery first created the design as an illustration which he sent to Halsey to congratulate her. When her cover of the September/October 2017 issue was released she posted the drawing on instagram and wrote “Good time to post this cute drawing my friend @curtmontgomerytattoos gave me!!! Might have to go get this tatted now that it’s official!!!!” She visited his Toronto tattoo parlor in October 2017 when her Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Tour brought her to the area.

Halsey loves looking at vintage Playboy issues and has been a fan of the magazine for a long time. She told Playboy “My first encounter with Playboy was at my aunt and uncle’s house. I think I was like 8 or 9 years old. I’ve been kind of obsessed since. Whenever I’m somewhere that has vintage Playboys I’m obsessed with going through them. It’s been a long road for me and Playboy.”

She feels strongly that being comfortable with her sexuality is empowering and fired back on those who criticized her scantily-clad photoshoot. She posted a reply to a commenter who thought the shoot conflicted with her feminist ideals: “yeah, it’s crazy. I can show my tits in Playboy, perform at the Nobel Peace, speak at the Planned Parenthood Gala with Hillary Clinton, shake my ass on 300 stages, give a speech at the United Nations, do 150 shots of tequila, get a #1 album, and march in the streets of DC in just ONE year!!! Newsflash. A woman can be multi dimensional. #WeAreNotJustOneThing”

Halsey got a tattoo of a butterfly on her right forearm from artist Jon Boy in May 2018. Butterflies have appeared in her artwork throughout the Hopeless Fountain Kingdom album cycle, including the “Bad At Love” single cover and final installment tour poster. Butterflies are the emblem of the House of Spera, one of the fictional rival families whose stories she tells on the album.

The exact butterfly design that Halsey tattooed on her arm was created as a logo for the Hopeless Fountain Kingdom tour, appearing on a variety of merchandise and on her meet and greet backdrop.

Halsey has the lyrics “i’m a loser baby” tattooed along the left side of her neck in delicate cursive writing. This phrase was made famous by alternative singer-songwriter Beck’s 1993 hit song “Loser,” however these lyrics are also used in the 2017 song “Loser Baby” by indie band La Bouquet. She is a fan of both artists but has more of a personal relationship with La Bouquet and has actually tweeted about their song, which is more likely the direct inspiration for the tattoo. La Bouquet band member Bryan Sammis was one of the opening acts for Halsey’s American You(th) Tour with his solo project Olivver the Kid.

Halsey’s tattoo was done by artist Jon Boy at Bang Bang Tattoos in New York City in January 2017. She was accompanied by her boyfriend G-Eazy for the second time. He got an angel and devil on his arms which Halsey drew for him.

Halsey has a tattoo on the inside of her right wrist featuring the lyrics “the crazy kind” from her duet “Him & I” with rapper G-Eazy. They sing the song from the perspective of two lovers but were also a real life couple at the time. In Halsey’s sung chorus to the song she describes their love as “the crazy kind” of love.

G-Eazy didn’t have any tattoos when they started dating, but Halsey changed that. The couple visited artist Jon Boy together for their first joint tattoo session in December 2017. While Halsey’s tattoo pays homage to the single “Him & I,” G-Eazy got his own tattoo representing the album that the song appears on. His tattoo was of his The Beautiful & Damned TB&D skull logo on his right forearm. Halsey got him hooked on the art of tattoos and he’s since gotten many more.

Halsey has a tattoo on her right forearm which says “BRAT” in graffiti-style capital letters. She showed off the brand-new tattoo in a May 2017 instagram photo. In a message with a fan, she explained that she got the tattoo because her mom and dad call her a brat. A brat is a spoiled child and it’s usually an insult, but Halsey sees it as a term of endearment instead.

Fans have pointed out that the word “brat” means brother/sibling in many languages including Russian, Polish and Serbian but this doesn’t seem to be what Halsey intended.
